"local names" display on maps is inappropriate and confusing

For several towns in France (and perhaps in other countries too) the map in OSMAND shows outdated and (for todays users) unknown names when the device is configured for German language and OSMAND is told to use "Local names" on maps.
So, for example: Nancy is shown as Nanzig, Besancon as Bisanz, Dijon as Dision, etc.
The old names are shown at zoom level 11 and below. From zoom level 12 and up the correct French names are displayed.
These strange names are defined in OpenStreetMap for these towns as "old_name:de".

I bet that 99% of the last 2 or 3 generations of Germans do not know Nanzig or Dision, and at Bisanz they would probably think of the old East Roman Empire.
I might (with strong reluctance) accept these names when the "Map preferred language" is set to German.
But when the setting is "Local names" then I definitely expect the map to display the local names, i.e. the names used in France.

My suggestion for OSMAND is to use always the normal name tag from OSM, which in the case of Nancy is "name:de=Nancy".
Ignore the "old_name" tags at all !!!

After looking up several other towns in other countries and checking their name settings in OSM I will redefine my suggestion:
When "Map preferred language" is "Local names" then use the OSM "name" tag without suffix, e.g. "name=Nancy".
When "Map preferred language" is language xx then use "name:xx".
But do never use old_name.
