okay, so i posted a topic that obviously fell dead.

my wishlist is to see Kts ( Knots ) as i am a pilot.  i love OSM because it covers some basic airfield information already, but, doing the math on the fly to convert MPH to Kts ( MPHx1.15=Kts)  is becoming a headache.

i use skyvector.com as my online maps source, whenever i have the MDT Available to use while flying with Civil Air Patrol.

can skyvector maps be tiled into OSM?

this would make OSM complete for me and earn the 5th star rating.

I support this suggestion.
Option to show speed in knots is a good idea.  Useful when using "River Mode" in Brouter.

Andrew,

Here are three .metainfo files to access IFR High, IFR Low, and Sectionals from iFlightPlanner.com

Create a separate folder for each one as sub-folders in the OSMAND/TILES folder. Place the .metainfo file in the appropriate sub-folder. and rename it to simply .metainfo (no filename).

The new raster maps will show up in your list of online maps. Make sure to cache them before leaving on a flight.

Regards,
Rick

Okay, so.  I created sub folders onside the following:  root>osmand>tiles>osmand (online> low, high and sectional  ,  respective to each metafile u sent me.

When i renamed the files and removed the file names they vanished.  Osm still has no source listed and no maps are being downloaded to be cached.

Okay, i see what i did wrong. I went one level to far.  So i moved the folders up one tree level and presto.   Thank you, metaluc.

Fyi. I did not have to rename the files either.  They are in the same format as you uploaded them.

final question,  do i have to download these everytime?  i know you mentioned "cache" them,  can i make a permanent offline copy of these?

Caching them on your phone stores them on your phones local storage so they will be available to you when flying and there is no WiFi or cellular data signal.

It is permanent until you delete it from your phone, or update it with newer map tiles.

An easy way to cache them is to set the map source to the map you want to cache, and then use the download menu from a long click on the map. Set the desired max zoom level and area you want to store.

You could always copy the files to an external device for later use, and to free up space on your phone.

I am not a pilot, but these change periodically. Reference the website for how often. It might be safer to download at that update interval.

I would be interested in hearing as a pilot how useful they are to you and how using them with osmand compares to other alternatives you may have used.

On of the great things about osmand is its versatility in accessing various types of maps.

Long pressing the map gives me a dropped pin of coordinates......

Where am i long clicking?

Ive been a pilot for 17 years.  95% rotor wing with Civil Air Patrol.  I have some fixed wing time on my own.  But i thoroughly enjoy helicopter time far better.

Because i have a MDT in the three birds i have to pilot i can use mobile data as needed.  If that falters i have the satcom based MDT.  Powered by the USAF.   But we would using this only in civil defense when tied into national grid downfall.

Map source is set to the raster tile map you want to cache. Long click on the map until a location box appears. Click on the vacation box, and a menu appears. Select the download option to store tiles of the map locally (caching).
