Please click menu button left under in the screen, click Show GPS status. If yiu don't have GPSinfo app, please install it (or any other GPS status app) and check if you have a fix on a certain position/coordinates.
Click on the top right cirkel (bullseye) to center te map to your gps location,  then the gps should turn on and the map will follow your position.  If you did manually zoom in / out or pan, this map following is off, click again on the circle and gps is turned on again and the map will go to your gps position once it found it. Getting a fix is sometimes difficult or impossible when you are in house, between trees and high buildings.

Do you have sufficient GPS reception?
Look at Androids GPS indicator in the Android status bar (at the top).

Sometimes it can take a long time to have your phone find it's own position, and this can be frustrating. The app GPS Status will link with Osmand. This app has a feature where you can refresh the A-GPS state, which in turn can make it find it's GPS position faster. If your phone cannot find itself, Osmand cannot be blamed for it's "position not yet known" message. I deal with this issue all the time too, with different programs.

IMHO there is no need to install extra app like GPS Status or similar,

because Osmand app includes a screen widget to display the number of visible and used GPS satellites.

Choose Main menu from map screen, and then Configure Screen ... scroll down to "GPS info" and activate that widget.

Success?

I think Nico W is suggesting GPS Status might actually provide data to supplement the phone's own GPS data.
