Why are the versions on F-Droid and Google Play different?

When looking for an app, I always start at F-Droid, to take advantage
of their vetting of the apps. When I looked for a maps/navigation
app, I found OsmAnd there.

Recently I've understood the version available via Google Play is more
recent, at least it has a higher version number, than the one on
F-Droid. Does anyone know the reason for the difference? Has there
been a license change?

AFAIK, OSMAnd+ is opensource, but payware to support the development,
providing extra features.

In my understanding, the licence allows to FDroid to take the code, remove
the payment related part and recompile it as a free application. That
causes the delay, plus they may not recompile every version.

Another point is that f-droid has an automated build system and when it
doesn't work (because of a build issue, or because of something
different in the new version of an app), it often takes a while for
someone to find time to deal with it.

I generally find that osmand versions in f-droid arrive within a few
weeks of the main releases. I tend to want to wait that long to update
to a new major version anyway.
