When Did Self Care Become a Dirty Word?

This workshop intends to highlight how the concepts and expectations surrounding self-care have changed throughout different generations in the American workforce, with a focus on physicians and other healthcare workers. These differing understandings have led to confusion and damaging assumptions on the part of both trainees, who are younger Millennial or Gen Z, and faculty, often Baby Boomer, Gen X, or Millennial. We will explore disparate conceptions and approaches to self-care based on generational identity and key historical events, and how these concepts may evolve through the course of professional identity formation. This workshop will also explore effective ways to openly communicate different perspectives and advocate for appropriate self-care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Assess wellness and evaluate current self-care techniques.
  2. Compare various self-care practices across generations.
  3. Apply self-care techniques from another generation and plan its integration into daily routine.

This year’s conference theme, "The Learner and Educator Approach to Modern Health Professions Education: Building Bridges", focuses on the evolving dynamics between cultural norms and traditional educational practices. The theme emphasizes the importance of bridging gaps and fostering mutual understanding between different perspectives, particularly in areas such as feedback, professionalism, professional identity, and self-care. Join us as we build bridges and shape the future of health professions education together. Stay tuned for the latest information and updates on our website.

This year’s conference will include:

  • Interactive & Engaging Workshops
  • SHAPES Presentations of Scholarly Work in Medical Education
  • Table Topics
  • Resource Fair
  • Poster Session
