hello I really need some help and am hoping somebody who is more
tech-literate than me will be able to solve my big problem with a simple
solution....sorry for the long post

I've been using an old version of Osirix (sorry cannot determine which
version now) on a 2011 MacBook pro (with OS X v10.10.5) for some time now
to do FRCR tutorials for exam preparation. All my cases are stored on an
external drive.

Was all going well and I got around the constant requests for updates and
telling me to buy Osirix MD by just switching off WiFi every time I opened
Osirix) but last night I tried to open Osirix to get images together for a
tutorial today and it just wouldn't open and I got a box saying I needed to
upgrade because it was out of date. Not sure why this suddenly happened as
the computer had not even been switched on for 2 weeks due to vacation.

To cut a very long story of repeated installing and uninstalling various
versions of Osirix and Horus into the early hours I am now left with being
able to open Osirix latest version and use *only* when connected to the
internet so it can check for updates (and presumably ask me repeatedly to
buy MD)

This would be workable in the short term except I cannot connect to WiFi at
work where I do my teaching because our hospital IT is s**t so I can no
longer teach our trainees!

I tried to move everything to Horus but the latest version I could use with
my OS just crashed all the time.

I was thinking of getting a new Mac sometime but just not planning to fork
out £2K this week.....

I am thinking when I do eventually get the new computer I will just go
straight to latest version of Horus and move my cases over to avoid all of
this hassle but in the meantime I would be eternally grateful for any
suggestions or solutions.

I am still able to install the old version of Osirix as it remains in my
downloads folder but it just will not open.
many thanks in advance
Helen (from BCH)

Hi Sameer
thank you for replying. Unfortunately on later versions of Osirix lite it does not allow you to uncheck the box that says 'automatically check for Osirix application updates at startup time', although you can uncheck the update plug ins box.
Tried to do same with the the old version I'd been happily using re-installed but this just won't open any more - you get a box saying outdated version - please update your application. Available on the website. I wonder if there is some time-expired setting that now only allows you to use it for 12 months or so before having to update?

Have updated laptop operating system to Sierra and now have latest version of Horus but not yet able to successfully open files on my external hard drive although it recognises the drive. Have tried copying settings from Osirix to Horus folder as per instructions on Horus website but not solved the problem

I'm obviously doing something wrong but have now installed and uninstalled software so many times and fiddled with settings I fear I could have made things worse. My external drive now has a lot of new things on it from Horus and Osrix which were never there before!
Can still view Osirix and files on external drive at home connected to WiFi but not at work where I need to do the teaching and I cannot connect to Wifi - am getting to my wits end and will have to cancel all teaching sessions I've agreed to do. Fortunately not teaching at Aintree this month or I'd probably have to pull out! I can't believe a ridiculous computer issue is driving me totally crazy....

Finally what do you mean by osiri-lxiv?

many thanks in advance
Helen

Dear Helen,

I appreciate that OsiriX Lite is getting more and more unusable and for those who don't want (or cannot afford!) to get OsiriX MD Horos is a good alternative.  You need to make a small change to your OsiriX databases to make them usable in Horos and because you and others have been having difficultly I have made a short video that I have uploaded to YouTube that I hope may be helpful to you and your colleagues.  The link below should take you there.  Good luck!

Best wishes, Mary.

I'm afraid to say it, but the grim future I predicted is nearing with OsiriX.

Please learn from this all of you and don't put all of your eggs in the Horus basket instead.

I've said it before and I'm going to play the broken record again:

- Create yourself a folder structure you understand on your drive
- Organise your DICOMs into these folders yourself
- Use whatever viewing software you like (Horus, OsiriX, RadiAnt...) but just REFERENCE the files in their permanent location instead of importing them into a database you have no understanding nor control over

If this concept is confusing to people I can provide screenshots, but I've done that before.

Dan

Dear Mary
Thank you so much. I now have lower blood pressure and all of my Osirix cases duplicated in a Horos database. I had unfortunately made things worse with my repeated meddling with things I do not really understand but looks like all is well, at least until Horos start playing up and activating the ransom demands!
I have never been so glad of back up discs and this forum,
Think I'll go and have another G&T to celebrate - what a relief.
Thanks again
Helen

Ps Daniel (AKA voice of doom?), I hope I don't need to ask you for those screenshots but I'll bear it in mind....
