We have had a request for a person to teach a class and potentially charge a fee or collect donations from class participants. The fees collected would be for profit/paying for the organizers time, NOT materials and other costs. I responded I would check with the organizing group. I'd like to raise this topic here for discussion to hopefully be resolved at the latest at our next organizer meeting November 2nd at 2-330pm.

The options I can think of:
  1. Let them use the space for free and allow them to charge participants for a profit
  2. Let them use the space for free and do not allow them to charge for a profit
  3. Let them use the space, allow them to charge, and collect a percentage or flat rate fee for space use.
  4. Allegra has also provided the flow chart attached that shows we could waive fees for mission aligned classes but potentially charge if its not tool library relevant and harmless.
Does anyone have a different proposed solution? Does anyone think one option is better than others and why? Thanks for your input! Remember this is a public forum so please be respectful.

I struggle with the idea of classes for pay. I’m hosting a class on the 15 and not looking to charge for my time. And yet, I could look at charging as well. My concern is faceted. If someone is wanting to conduct a class for profit, then as a host facility, we should have a cut of that for use of space. We are a nonprofit but we also need to pay the rent. For my tools class, I don’t intend to charge for anything, but would like to extend the opportunity for donations to be given. Again to help fund the tool library. Are we actively collecting dues yet. Again we need a funding stream to pay the bills.my thought for my class is if they know how to use tools, then they may be willing to borrow ours and help support our effort.
