LIBERATE THE LAND on Saturday, June 1st in San Francisco!

MORE BAY AREA FARMS ARE UNDER THREAT...

This year alone, three beautiful, educational, and highly productive urban farms are slated to for development in San Francisco, mostly for development of high-end housing.  SF farmers and neighbors are shaking their heads at the potential loss, knowing that 36,000 housing units stand empty in the city.

Occupy the Farm expresses solidarity and endorses this call to action by San Francisco urban farmers:

Saturday, June 1st 2013, 1pm

@ The Free Farm, 950 Gough St & Eddy St, San Francisco

LIBERATE THE LAND SCHEDULE

1-2pm: Facilitated discussion on city-wide development trends that threaten an alarming amount of viable urban garden space and several existing permaculture farms.

2pm: Rally and direct action!   Gather across from the Free Farm and walk to a piece of land, plant food and hold organic, edible garden space.  Come ready to build a village!  Workshops, skill shares, food and music!

SUPPORT THE SF FARMERS:

1.  Visit the farms, especially  on June 1st.  To organize to play music, host a workshop, teach a skill share, lead a meditation, or otherwise share your joy, contact HumanB...@GMail.com

2.  Help us move:  We need folks with trucks, cars, or even better, bicycles and carts to transport some materials around on June 1st.

3.  Donate material supplies. Prepared meals, staple foods, and organic produce is greatly appreciated, as is water.

4.  Click here to contribute financially through Occupy The Farm’s wepay.  Contact Libera...@gmail.com if you donate with your name and amount so that we can keep account of donations.

5.  Keep in touch!

GILL TRACT FARM UPDATE

This past weekend saw an incredible turnout for the International March against Monsanto.  Occupy the Farm participated and spoke at both the San Francisco and Oakland marches, and we converged at the Gill Tract Farm afterward for workshops on food sovereignty, music, dinner and an overnight stay.  Farmers also began a soil project to heal the few patches of earth on the farm that have been damaged through the small amount of construction that has happened on the farm in recent decades.

We are excited to continue to engage with the farmland in a mutually beneficial way, learning and collecting data that can help other farmers and gardeners tackle one of the biggest challenges to urban farming - healing and ammending urban soil for optimal food production.   And guess what!?  The soil project can’t be tilled under -- a plow would only help the process of aerating and feeding the soil.

Farmers plan to return to the Gill Tract Farm on June 15th, with further soil workshops and a debrief from members of Via Campesina about their VI International Conference.
