Antananarivoians,

Matt Hall of Agile, Sergey Fomel, and I are working to organize the Reproducibility Zoo for this fall's annual meeting.
The collaborative hackathon style event will feature SEG members nominating and voting on geophysical papers to reproduce using an interactive platform that Agile will design, and participants will hack away at a reproduction.

We will have floor space in the Exposition, a large working area with tables, some large screens to show results, and some laptops provided by a sponsor for participants who don't have one available.

We plan on having the hackathon sessions coinciding with the technical sessions when the Exposition Hall is open, as well as a session during Sunday's Icebreaker.

We are seeking volunteer "Zookeepers" to help out with running the event.  If you are free during one of the technical sessions please sign up using the linked google spreadsheet and indicate your tshirt size (Matt plans on making up some shirts for volunteers).  I plan on being there to help out during every session except Tuesday PM when I will be presenting.

Please consider signing up!  This should be a fun opportunity to gain some hacking / programming skills and do some networking.  It would be wonderful if we could have 3-4 volunteers for each time slo.  At a minimum I would love to have 2, so please consider filling in slots that don’t yet have two volunteers if you are able.

And please feel free to pass this to any friends or colleagues you have that might be interested!

I've also attached a document on the reproducibility zoo if you want more info.

And please feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or ideas!

Hi Luke,

Sounds fun to attend.

``I've also attached a document on the reproducibility zoo if you want more info. ''

>> Would you mind attaching the document again? I only see the volunteer sign-up sheet.

Cheers,
Hui

Thanks for your interest!  I think the list server truncates the attachments, so I have copied the text in the document below.
Thanks,
Luke

Reproducibility Zoo at SEG AM, Anaheim, 2018 What is it?

Attendees would use the data cited in SEG publications to test and reproduce geophysical scholarship at an event/space during Annual Meeting. This project has the potential to be competitive as well, which could make the reproduction of the research an interesting spectator activity for other attendees. People could contribute in lots of ways

— nominating papers or figures, helping digitize or enter data, coding algorithms and visualizations, testing the submissions, getting involved on the social media side, review and documentation, etc. anyone can participate. Goal: 1000 participants.

Why is it important?

Reproducible research is one of the tenets of scholarship. The act of reproducing another geoscientists findings has educational value for the researcher, the reproducing geoscientist, and the community as a whole. There’s much interest from the scientific community to strengthen reproducibility and reuse of research. This effort could nicely mirror and amplify the new data policy under development by the SEG Knowledge Management department and publications volunteers.

How will it be received?

Creating a slightly competitive atmosphere with leader (or 'contribution') boards for participants could make for a fun, energetic event. Generally, there is much interest in the geoscience community for this type of experiential learning demonstrated by interest in hackathons and workining workshops.

Budget estimate

  • ●  Exhibition floor space plus furniture. Ca. 1000 sq ft.

  • ●  Access to internet, depending on the design of the event, could increase the overall

    costs.

  • ●  AV equipment, screens, etc.

  • ●  Small prizes or other bits of recognition.

  • ●  An app to tie the online contributions etc together. Agile can develop this, maybe

that's our in-kind contribution. We can all help put a budget together.

Other notes

  • ●  Space, like maybe 2000 sq ft, ideally on the exhibition floor, ideally near the student area and bookshop area;

  • ●  Furniture — mostly just tables and chairs, nothing too fancy

  • ●  AV equipment for emceeing (I think we could find 2-3 people to share this duty

  • ●  I volunteer :) and for some music (just a bit)

  • ●  At least 4 large screens upon which to show people what is going on — live coding,

    contribution board, etc.

  • ●  Some signage and general advertising, position in the programme, etc.

    People
