Subject: [FSFTN] Missing Software in GNU/Linux
To: chenna...@googlegroups.com, software...@yahoogroups.com, maili...@fsftn.org

GNU/Linux has tons and tons of software.
It has everything for normal computer users.

But, If you take the fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, even
in computer science,
most of the software available for windows are not available for GNU/Linux.
Even there are no alternate software most times.

Let us list the Missing Software in GNU/Linux.

This will be a good chance for the developers, entrepreneurs and students
to pick any tool and implement in linux.

This list may contain the name of the proprietary software or the
functionality itself.

Here is my list.

1. Tamil Typing Tutor
2. Good OCR
3. Speech to Text converting software
4. Tally
5. AutoCAD
6. LABView
7. Dreamviewer

Please add your suggestions here.

With a big list of software to be developed, we can start a dev camp
or dev center in chennai.

Thanks.

Kompozer is very good and is a very good alternative to Dreamviewer.

I am not a GIMP user , (I do not know image editing, it need it for cropping purpose)

But i heard that GIMP is power enough to produce almost anything which photoshop can do.. there may be 10% missing feature but only 1% use those feature

I agree, I has to learn..  it

Yes, I too agree with Narendra Sisodiya. GIMP contains almost all features of Photoshop (expect text editing,as gimp is raster image editing).

so, do we have the following basic things in GIMP

1. Content Aware Fill
2. Adjustment Layers
3. Content Aware Transformation
4. Puppet Warp
5. Media Management like Bridge
6. RAW image processing
7. Refine Edge with multiple options
8.

I too have my share of liking towards FOSS but just because we we support Open Source, we cannot ignore that truth that it is only good for all kind of Servers like, Apache, RED5, Asterisk, MySQL, Subversion, SNMP Monitoring, Mail Servers, File Server, Alfresco, UTM/Firewall Vyatta, IPCop etc, etc.

But when it comes to Desktop Applications, its only Windows, Photoshop, Corel Draw, 3D Studio, yes...MS Office, Visual Studio, Dreamweaver, Quark Express.

As a web developer, I could say GIMP is more than enough to design websites.

उपलब्ध हो जाए तो वह विंडोज़ को उसी समय त्याग देगा।

i do not agree, maybe you dont know all the features and its importance. But anyway you may be happy because you are a developer and not a designer. It would be great if you can answers about the features i had asked, else keep your mouth shut.

You are totally behaving like a un-mannered boy.. This is an open discussion forum and you will be banned for behaving like this. (immediately) & I do not want to do that..

Also I hate people who say the software do not have that feature.. or something like this..
Take flash back.. let visit 1985 , where there not a single Free Software (may be there were some) And that time a person started a movement for a purpose  - Purpose was not get a fully featured software or something else.. Point is we a social person must "say no to" all such activities which prohibit sharing non-tangible things. Like software, We love FOSS because it give freedom. we may or may not use the freedom , which is another point, just like voting right.. we must have voting right whether you use it or not..

In FOSS community there are some guys who are just feature oriented and like freeware.. they just use the software which works for them..
FOSS and small and self sufficient community which exist because of values and not features or somethings else..

Just adding one point that, In a free software if there are features missing there are opportunities to add those. Thus
people can learn while contributing. This is very crucial, at least for student community.
