This website provides information and resources for the UCI Calculus courses, Math 2A and Math 2B. Please consult your instructor's syllabus and course webpage for more complete details about your particular section.

Common Final ExamThe Math 2A and 2B courses have a common final exam, meaning all students in the course take the same final exam at the same time, regardless of individual course section. The common final for Summer Session 2, 2019 will take place on Wednesday, September 11th, 5 - 7 pm. For details about the common final, as well as the make-up final exam policy and make-up exam request form, please visit the Common Final Exam web page.

-->Suggested HomeworkBelow is a set of suggested homework problems for Math 2A and 2B. This is meant to be a minimal set of problems for students to solve in order to help master the Calculus material. Your individual instructor may assign different problems.

Below are sample midterms and final exams that may be useful practice in preparation for course exams. These give examples of questions which could be asked on the actual exams, but the actual exams given in your class could be shorter or longer than these samples. These are in no way meant to be a comprehensive review of course material and should NOT be used as the sole study mechanism. Individual instructors may slightly vary the content cutoff for the midterms, so be sure to attend class and review the relevant midterm material for your particular course. (The topic of Arc Length has been moved from Math 2B to Math 2D, which is why you are instructed to ignore several of the exam questions below.)

Final Exam Review GuideBelow are short review guides to help direct your studying for the common final exam in Math 2A and Math 2B. These guides are NOT comprehensive reviews of all the material covered on the final exam. The guide is simply a list of the sections covered and a list of some of the formulas which students may be expected to know to complete questions on the exam (e.g., trig identities, geometry formulas, etc.). There will be no calculators, notes or other references allowed on the final exam.

-->Review Materials: (Algebra and Trigonometry)Students tend to struggle with Calculus material if they have not adequately mastered Algebra and Trigonometry skills. Below are links to some review materials that may help you prepare for success in your Calculus course.

This course covers multi-variable and vector calculus. Topics include analytic geometry of three dimensions, partial derivatives, optimization techniques, multiple integrals, vectors in Euclidean space, and vector analysis.

Students are required to purchase access to MyLab Math to complete the online homework, and possibly quizzes and exams. The MyLab assignments are similar to the exercises in the official list of HW exercises. (The official HW exercises are not handed in for grading but instead form a significant, but not exhaustive, portion of your study guide for the course.) Each assignment will have a specific due date set by the professor, and these assignments must be completed online.

How to use MyLab properly:
If you take shortcuts like trying to find answers to MyLab problems from various "homework help" web services without solving all of the problems yourself in their entirety, then your performance on exams will suffer. Instead, use the built-in help tools within MyLab. This online homework exists primarily to give you feedback on your ability to calculate correct answers at early stages of the learning process. The homework is not intended to measure your mastery of the material; only the midterm exams and final exam measure mastery. Without doing well on the exams, it is impossible to pass the course, even with a perfect score on the homework. So be sure to take full advantage of MyLab to get as much feedback as possible on your problem-solving skills.

Extra problems 251if you have finished working on the practice exams and additional review material provided by your instructor, you may want to check this list of problems if you want to do additional practice problems. Some of these are more conceptual in nature, so they may be useful to enhance your understanding of the course material.

Several times, I have come close to losing a student's Calculus exam. These exams are usually common exams, with everyone grading 100's of stacks. I've had exams go in wrong piles or get squished in the bottom of backpacks.

If an exam were lost in such a class (with hundreds of students taking a common Calculus midterm), what could I do that would be fair to this student and to others? I'd like to have a plan before it happens.

Get a sheet signed by each student who took the exam, use that to check nothing is amiss. I collect exams (and keep them during the whole grading process) into large, sturdy envelopes. So no sheet can wander away.

I separate exams by question, each question to be graded separately (some by TAs). Students are required to turn in all questions, with a sheet identifing the question and the student, even if otherwise blank. No chasing "where is question 5 from ..." (at least much, much less), and no suspect "I forgot to turn in question 3, and found it today" type requests.

Massive classes (hundreds of students, many graders) require a well-thought-out, orderly, and rigurously followed logistics process. Not only in handling the exams, but in making sure grading is uniform (detailed grade assignment, covering not only the typical solution but also alternatives is a must), and also reliable recording of the resulting grades.

EDIT: in light of other remarks... this presumes you do have a system to certify that the exam was handed in, so that students are not gaming you. Even in a large class, it's worth doing this. Having a list of names to check off can succeed even with a large class and in a large room, since you can take the viewpoint that there was no way for any exam to get lost _through_your_malfeasance_. Thus, in that situation, any missing exam is concluded to have not been handed in.

Even if the student was not stellar, it would be presumptious (or worse) to exclude the possibility that they did well on the exam... Giving them the mean or any other quasi-uniform replacement score seems to me completely insufficient.

The fact that other students might resent ... your not having lost their paper? ... is a very secondary issue. I would think that, instead, they should understand that you feel responsible to the student whose paper you lost!
