Please visit the group wiki. It has posted notes from the session.
Access it at http://oscd.pbworks.com/
Sorry that the acronym for the wiki and the mail list don't match, the
Google group oscd was taken.

There's a significant overlap between the information for this new
wiki and what we've already collected on the <http://
pdxgroups.pbworks.com> wiki and on <http://calagator.org/>.

There is also a strong desire to improve Calagator to serve multiple
regions, add user accounts and track the organizations (user groups,
companies, etc) that put the events on. All of this is described in
one of the inital drafts of Calagator at <http://is.gd/18WOE>.

I feel that by leveraging existing data and making some minor
improvements to Calagator, we'd be able to track: events; venues and
meeting spaces; user groups, organizations, and companies; people and
their roles.

Thoughts?

Sorry, I feel like I got off on the wrong foot. Please let me try
again....

Hi! I'm excited by your suggested project and feel it's worth doing. I
and a number of my collegues have spent a lot o time working towards a
similar goal, and I feel that our projects may have a lot in common.

We first decided to create a directory of user groups in the Portland
area, and published this as a wiki at <http://pdxgroups.pbworks.com>.
This list has proven valuable for spreading the word and bridging
awareness between groups of events that have common interests.

We later tried to publish a Google Calendar with the events for these
groups, but this didn't turn out so well because it was hard to
contribute changes and thus data went stale quickly.

We then built a wiki-editable open source calendar to track tech
events in the Portland area and published it at <http://calagator.org/
>. It currently tracks just events and venues in our area, but we've
made progress towards creating a system to track users and have had a
lot of discussion about how to expand this project so that one site
can support multiple geographies, and connect groups and individuals
with events and venues. You can see some of this plan in our early
mockups at <http://is.gd/18WOE>. That mockup and discussions are a
very close match to what you've described in the wiki.

Many people have helped create and support Calagator, but we're
struggling to find enough volunteers to create these new features.
We'd be interested in getting volunteers to help with analysis,
coding, UI, writing, research and outreach. I'd be very glad to speak
with you about combining forces to see what we can do together.

Igal I see your point about the data overlap, but the intent for display of that data is very different. Even if calagator were to gain a directory feature that listed all the events and there contact info we would never list LoT, we would not list everone who is on pdx on fire, unless they are the one who inputs an event, we would miss out on a large slice of the foundation of this community. The way I see this project is just an aggrigate of many data points, including calagator with the hope to make access to the comunity easy.

I also agree that this process has been started  few times, though I do not feel that this is not worth doing.

Ben said,

I agree

Yes, that's my idea

This needs to be the highest priority.

Let's figure out why they failed so that we don't

I feel that a partnership with Calagator would be a great asset to
both projects. Could Calagator leverage OSCDP data?

Everybody,

Thanks for getting involved with this project. I have updated the
mission statement on the wiki to make the international purpose more
clear, and to invite more collaborators. Please look over the data
model and data sources parts of the Directory Categories pages to see
what improvements can be made.

Thanks,
Peter
