Michael Thomas: Congress is trying to force the largest sell-off of public lands in US history. And most Americans haven't heard a thing about it. So I made some graphics to show what's at stake if this sell-off happens.
The mega-bill currently making its way through Congress would mandate government agencies sell between 2.2 million and 3.3 million acres of public land.
But that mandate understates what's at risk. It would also make ~250 million acres of public lands available for sale. Some of America's most beautiful, untouched public lands could be sold off for private development.
Congress' mega-bill is full of all kinds of other unpopular provisions including cuts to clean energy funding, food stamps, and medicaid.
A recent poll found that most Americans oppose this bill. But here's the problem: 70% of Americans have heard "Nothing at all" or "A little" about it.
This isn't about traditional partisan politics or culture war issues. Public lands are treasured by Republicans and Democrats alike.
Many Senators have expressed deep concerns about this bill. There's no doubt it can be stopped. But only if Americans know what it would actually do.
