Thenew regulations will demand that all tyres sold in India meet crucial performance and safety standards such as rolling resistance and wet grip. When this regulation becomes mandatory, all domestic and foreign manufacturer and importers of truck, bus and passenger car tyres will be required to attribute BEE star label to tyres sold in India.

What does a popular tyre company have to do with the best restaurants in the world? Of course, they run an elite rating system in which the eateries are starred according to the dining experience they deliver. Are you shocked yet?

The prestigious Michelin star rating system is a culinary rating system originated from the Michelin Guide, which was created by the French tyre company Michelin! Read on to know how it became the benchmark for the best culinary experiences provided by restaurateurs across the world.

How it came to be

In the early 20th century, Michelin published the Michelin Guide as a means to promote automobile tourism and boost demand for cars and, consequently, tyres. The guide provided useful information for motorists, including maps, tyre repair instructions, and lists of hotels and restaurants.

Over time, the Michelin Guide evolved to focus more on dining recommendations, eventually introducing the Michelin star rating system to denote exceptional restaurants. Despite its origins as a marketing tool for a tyre company, the Michelin Guide has become one of the most respected authorities in the culinary world, with its star ratings highly coveted by chefs and restaurants worldwide.

What does the stars mean?

Restaurants are awarded Michelin stars based on the quality of their food, the skill of their chefs, the creativity of their menus, and the overall dining experience they offer. The Michelin Guide uses a system of one to three stars to rate restaurants:

Three stars: A restaurant with three Michelin stars is exceptional and worth a special journey. These restaurants represent the pinnacle of culinary achievement, with superlative cuisine, impeccable service, and a unique atmosphere.

Earning even a single Michelin star is considered a significant accomplishment in the culinary world, and chefs and restaurateurs often strive for this recognition as a mark of excellence. The Michelin Guide is published annually and covers various cities and regions worldwide, with each edition featuring a selection of the best restaurants in the area, as judged by Michelin's team of anonymous inspectors.

The Michelin Guide traditionally covers specific regions and cities, focusing primarily on Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia. Until now, the guide had not extensively covered India, which could explain the absence of Michelin-starred restaurants there. However, there are several popular restaurants in other countries that serve Indian cuisine and were awarded with Michelin stars. Gymkhana located in London, Junoon located in New York CityRasoi by Vineet situated in Geneva, Switzerland, Tamarind in London, The Song of India in Singapore and Veeraswamy in London are some among them.

Despite the absence of Michelin-starred restaurants, India boasts a rich and diverse culinary landscape with numerous acclaimed restaurants and chefs. Recognition in the Michelin Guide is just one aspect of culinary prestige, and many Indian chefs and establishments have earned accolades and acclaim through other avenues.

Leading global tyre maker, Michelin, has become the first tyre brand in the passenger vehicle segment in India to be accredited with the newly introduced star labelling programme by Government of India.

The BEE conducts star labelling test on tyres on various aspects, such as testing of rolling resistance coefficient and wet grip index. A 5-Star product, on average, consumes up to 9.5% less fuel when compared to any other lower star-rated tyre, co-relating to lesser greenhouse gas emissions, a release by the company stated.

Apollo Tyres has introduced specific tires for electric vehicles (EVs) for both passenger vehicles and two-wheelers. The Apollo Amperion range of tires for the passenger vehicle segment, whereas the Apollo WAV range is for two-wheelers. Both were launched for the Indian market. Apollo Amperion has also become the first Indian tire to have received fuel savings label with a 5-star rating for the passenger vehicle category by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

The Apollo WAV will cater to the majority of high-powered electric scooters available in India, like TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450. The company says it plans to develop EV tires for motorcycles in the next phase.

Last year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed the 'star rating' or 'labeling' norms for tyres for better fuel-saving and comfortable driving. The Standard and Labelling Programme is an initiative of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), which was set up in 2002 under the provision of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, assists in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles to consertve energy.

Typically, the rating on the tyre --- will be affixed on the sidewall of the tyre --- indicates its rolling resistance and fuel efficiency potential. All tyre brands in India can apply for the star rating, and based on their performance, the tyres will get a start rating, not dissimilar to the ones we get to see in, says AC or refrigerator.

A lower rolling resistance coefficient will help in saving on fuel and hence will get higher star rating. The label will also give out infor like tyre tread patterns, brand, model and year, size and class.

If this regulation becomes mandatory (which it will), all domestic and foreign manufacturer and importers of truck, bus and passenger car tyres will be required to attribute BEE star label to their tyres sold here.

Similar star rating labels are soon to be introduced for tyres inIndia which in essence will signify the fuel saving properties of the tyresbased on rolling resistance coefficient.

TheDG-Bureau of Energy Efficiency (DGBEE), backed by the Petroleum ConservationResearch Association (PCRA) which again comes under the aegis of Ministry ofPetroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, is expected to introduce thisnew star rating of domestic tyres for cars, SUVs, trucks, etc. The fuel savingproperties (Rolling Resistance Coefficient under Star Labelling on side wallsof tyres) is expected to come into effect by early December 2019. Initially, this labelling will be done by companies on a voluntary basis.

Accordingto SP Singh, Sr Fellow and Coordinator, Indian Foundation of Transport Researchand Training (IFTRT), instead of vague tyre quality claims as existing now, thenew star rating labelling on side walls of tyres, although voluntary initiallyfor 2 years, will separate men from boys in the domestic tyre market to protectthe consumers and promote fuel saving tyres in national interest.

Tyre Star Rating: The government will soon come up with a new 5-star rating for the tyre industry. For this, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has completed its talks with the tyre industry. The tyres will be given ratings based on its ability to save fuel, ensure safety and prevent skidding of the vehicle.

Existing rules

Currently, BIS rules apply for the quality of tires. This shows the same level of quality, but the customers do not know which tire they should buy. Because all tires come with a BIS certificate.

In a press note, the company said multiple SKUs of the 16-inch Apollo Endurace RA and LD have received 5-star ratings from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), with a few also receiving 4-star ratings.

The Apollo EnduRace RA and Apollo EnduRace LD tube type radial ranges are for steer axle or all-wheel fitment and drive axle fitment, respectively. These variations offer 4x2 trucks with a load carrying capability of up to 9 tonnes to meet all the regional transportation requirements of domestic customers for both short- and long-haul applications across the nation.
