to OSAKIS SILVERSTREAKS
silver streaks slip by UNC
What a game last friday night . An hour or so rain delay a soggy wet
field , and wet soggy fans all in store for one action packed high
scoring game , which would all boil down to a 42-40 Osakis victory in
overtime . The game was fast paced as both teams set out to pass the
ball . There were passes down ,over, through and around the defense's.
It seemed neither team could stop the passing on slaught ,and it was
Osakis was the only team that seemed able to tally up some rushing
yardage , as Charlie Jennings and Lud , chris Ludwig , slashed and
plowed and at times just simply ran over the defense . Charlie was Mr.
Hustle as he cut and slashed and sprinted down the side lines. The big
question tonight was not offense or who would carry the ball or sho
would score , the question i was left with was more who could stop
this onslaught ? Osakis defense ,did a fair job stopping what running
UNC through at them which wasn't much , but struggled to slow down
that passing attack . It seemed that the UNC play caller had virtually
all the time he needed to set things up , look and look and search for
that reciever and then locate and deliver ... He had little pressure
most of the night . There was a few big momments of defensive power
when Greg Guyette #90 rushed the QB and was able to for a few mommnets
seem to disprupt his timing and make contact... there were a few
others as well that at times were able to break through that iron wall
of an offensive line and get some penetration , but not enough, not
enough to allow 40 points ... Whew thats a lot , but as a fan i will
say bring it on love those high scoring games , plenty to watch and
cheer for ... But i am sure frustrating if your a coach ,as each game
your searching for that ray of light that will shine in your next
game. Tonight there were few rays shining as the sky filled with
clouds then poured , poured an offensive onslaught that both teams
delivered. As a fan watching i see some speed out there and some
power , man i wouldn;t want to block some of these guys , like
nack ,Johnson and larson to name a few ..Not only are these guys big
and strong but quick ... Turn these boys loose i say , let em at that
QB , a few times ..i am sure then he would here footsteps in his head
and be thinking escape in stead of concentrating on where he can
deleiver his next bomb. I think Osakis as a team has lots of talent
here ,and are just a few big defensive plays from toppling their
division ranks ... Each team they have played they have shown great
ability ,but lacked concentration and ability to finish a game ...
Take Browerville they came out hard and strong , those kids were
hitting like Mike tyson in a brawl, and the Streaks hit back and
stayed with them until right after half time , then they sort of lost
focus missed plays ,and gave the game away ... same with OTC in week
one , a few plays,a few less turnovers and who knows the outcome
could have been different. The point is these boys were at some time
in these games in the hunt . They have the potential to break it open
at any time all they need is to stay focused , and go get it .. Now
back to UNC , the boys were playing tough , a little soft on pass
defense ,no pressure on the QB and a few blown coverages , but their
offense kept them in it .. Get this D on target and look out this is a
team to be reckoned with to say the least ... i think they could beat
OTC ,and Browerville both ... All they need is a little more D , get
some penetration and move guys around a bit blitz more , make the game
fun let these animals loose .. i see plenty of speed and strength in
these kats cut them loose ... i sure would hate to be looking across
pads and see a larson come charging in my direction intent on blasting
me to the ground ,or a nack or roggenbuck, or a hoist of others ...
The one other thing that was frustrating at the UNC game was other
than the weather and the long wait after a long ride , was the
officials ... No not in the way you would think , for next to coaching
these guys have maybe the toughest job of all. They have to make the
calls like them or not . Sure i saw a few blown calls ,and a few that
went against our guys , but i also saw a few that could have gone
against us as well... I started thinking back to my old umpire days
and realized you call what you see or i should say think you see,or
saw... why are we so anamored by instant replay ? is it because we
think the play will be over ruled ? Have you ever sat and watched a
game and there is a crucial play , they other coach calls for a
review , the announcers in the booth are jabbering on about the call
one for it one against it ,then they show their view they play back
their video ... one angle it looks like a catch , wait a minute the
other angle it looks like it hit the ground , which is it catch or
ground ... well da thats why instant replay , but here's the thing
they are zooming in and looking at all angles .. the official on the
field is seeing with his eyes while trying to watch everything else
around him ,and make that call in a split instant , a mer second . He
makes a decision faster than i can type makes decision ... He has no
review , ... But whats really interesting here is go back to your
living room ,now be honest i bet that in your room huddled around that
tv on any givin replay situation their will be someone , or someones
that see it differently or think they do or did ... Even with replay
looking at all the angles there are just some plays that aren't that
cut and dry and even the announcers scramble and are deceived or in
doubt and they are zooming in ... Even then we don;t always agree its
human nature ... Now think of that official who is out there
overseeing that game so our kids can play and he is attempting to make
it as fair as possible , calling what he see's albeit sometimes he is
wrong ,sometimes he misses things , sometimes and more often than not
he is right and we just plain don;t agree ... anyhow either way he is
basing it on what he see's or thinks he see's , and doing his best and
without them you have no game at all.. Plus its a given in any sport
at any level they miss calls its all part of it , and if they threw a
flag for everything we would be playing flag football not tackle .
trust me here ... plus one or two calls typically do not make or break
a game as one would think , you have 4 qaurters to get it right and
score or stop them from scoring ,many plays happen in that time each
one contributing to the final outcome ,not just one... now back to UNC
friday night , walk aroudn that field once or twice ,look onto it ,
that lighting there is anything but the best ,its hard to read the
uniforms if your at the wrong angle ... so right there is a
disadvantage to everyone on the field ... I did think the refs missed
a few , but did it change the outcome i don;t think so for i saw a lot
they didn't call , not to mention a big one they could have easily
thrown a few times as members of our watching ,cheering ,yelling fans
were anything but polite , and down right nasty at times and this
could have drawn a few flags as well quite easily . So remember
sportsmanship is not only on the field but in the stands as well or
along the field .. We all make up the silverstreaks ... Now i am not
saying that the refs were perfect here but that we as fans need to
look at it in their shoes to and be better sportsman about it ... it
was a long night i know , and my mouth has gotten me in trouble before
so i know first hand when we react with passion about the sport we
love what can happen if we open it up at the wrong time to the wrong
people ..All i can say is open mouth insert foot ... Our mouths can
create some pretty deep wounds sometimes that do not heal very well ,
i know ... anyhow Go streaks !!! and remember good sportsmanship on
and off the field of play ....
GOOD LUCK VS. USA should be a great game , hope our defense can pick
it up and drive through that line and make some stops because these
boys will be running right at us ... and they are tough a lot like
browerville ... need to make the tackles.
great to see Pat back and coach I ,and coach moore , good luck
guys .....
