to OSAKIS SILVERSTREAKS
its that time again Streak Wrestling time
Well it’s that time of year again. The mats are rolled out and the
hoops lowered.
Its winter sports time again. It should be a great year . I look
forward to sitting in the stands ,the shouts from the crowd , the band
blasting at halftime the cling of a ball hitting the rim , the sound
of a whistle , the slap of the mat ..
Now the mats are rolled out, the crowd gathered, clocks lit,
anticipation mounting , coaches sitting mat side mentally going over
the battle ,green and red facing off , whistle blow’s ,takedown, pin,
another Streak win , yes its mat rat time again, waits over time for
some wrestling.
This year should prove to be a tough one for the mat rats of
Osakis, as this young team will fight its way through the competition…
Deemed to be the underdog or more commonly referred to as the spoiler,
I think these guys might just be one of the teams to beat.
FROM THE BLEECHERS I see that these guys have some real
fight and potential, as the young guns and this squad will keep
scrapping and getting better . Led by some good veterans I think these
guys have what it takes to be knocking on the door of a sectional
title. As I sat watching last week at the Browerville tri – it dawned
on me that Browerville was picked as the team to beat , and the
Streaks hammered away at them , forfeiting a few weights , give that
back and it could have been a Streaker victory. I saw some incredible
matches from this young squad still trying to iron out its identity.
Each match was exciting beginning to end, and there were plenty of
tough matches to say the least. Browerville was every bit what they
were billed to be, but the Streaks stuck with them, many matches could
have gone easily in our win column , dang that 3 minutes . I saw the
young guys step it up and when you’re sitting in the stands , there is
nothing better than when your team comes out , and lays it all out
there . I was sitting there clicking away shot after shot , when Derek
Stoetzel’s match came up and for a few moments there forgot to shoot
pictures I began cheering ,and yelling , and was caught up in the
battle before I knew it. That’s how this sport grabs hold of you. It
may only be 9 minutes but dang those 9 minutes are very intense to say
the least , the excitement grab’s you ,yank’s you right out of your
seat. These Streaks gave it to Browerville and showed their toughness
and I see all mat as the streak’s will battle to the top this season.
Senior Wendell Larson proves to be the man this season and
has a great shot to make state ,again , this could be the year, his
last year. He recently celebrated his 102nd victory, yes 102nd , with
somewhere around 70 pins , that is an unbelievable achievement , as
this sport is tough. These guys go through match after match giving it
110 %, opponent after opponent, it wears me out just watching , let
alone these guys actually waging the mat war. No sport is tougher,
none , and what other sport can you battle as an individual and a team
at the same time, where both matter equally. Wendell Larson is an all
around wrestler , and looks to be the kid to beat at 215 . State has
him ranked at 3rd , Watching his speed and strength , I could see
that ,and maybe a spot or two more. I haven’t seen many kids come out
in this weight class with such a combination of speed , balance and
strength , and sheer will… This will no doubt be his year ..
Other senior wrestlers to watch ,are Jesse Becerra , David
Hagen, Aaron Thomas , and Derek Waldvogel once he can limp his way
back onto the mat this January , hampered by a knee injury, this
streak is slowed but by NO means stopped. This group of seniors has
great experience and leadership that will be invaluable as the young
mat rats climb and claw their way to the top. It’s always fun watching
Derek and Jesse win the take down battles , they have some of the best
takedown moves in the class , then through in the way Aaron masters
the mat , great up man, then throw in the power and speed and
domination of Wendell Larson, and Cody Torkleson, the scrappiness of
Derek Stoetzel, Austin Collins, James Gabrielson, Nick Waltersdorf,
Jared wagner, Nikolaj Hagen, Chris Ludwig, Trent Johnson and toss in a
great coach and mentor in Coach “SUPER K” , and you’re way on your
way.
GO STREAKS!
There are plenty of young guns to watch for excitement this
season ,and if you’ve never been to a match ,or it’s been a while head
on down to the gym Thursday the boys will be battling at home , I
promise you action and excitement like you never seen before..Get
ready to leave your seat…
Don’t miss out ,come catch the action ! There maybe only 4
seniors ,5 juniors and host of underclassman but what they lack in age
and experience they give in fight…
It’s this fans view that if you want some really cheap
entertainment that will leave you screaming for more don’t look any
farther than your local OHS high school gym. Where the action is live
and coming at you , no need for 3D glasses here folks , just grab your
seat and hold on…It’s only began and I can’t wait for more….
