"The National Anthem" is a black comedy and political satire, played straight as a drama.[10][11][12][13][14] Reviewers varied in finding the episode overall comedic,[10][13] or only finding humour in limited parts of the episode, such as Rod Senseless's character.[14][15] A theme identified in the episode was the spread of information amongst a country with both news media and social media such as Twitter.[10][12][15][16] Richard Edwards of GamesRadar+ wrote that "nobody has any control of the spread of information any more",[16] whilst David Lewis of Cultbox said that the society depicted was "so constantly bombarded with data that it is no longer able to process information".[12] Emily Yoshida of Grantland commented that this information is not making us better or smarter or happier".[17]
Am I the only one who does this? I feel like if I were to have started watching from episode 1 I may have not wanted to watch another episode, I just feel like its an uncomfortable start to the show, and should probably just be watched later on after you get a real feel for black mirror. Thoughts??
After reading a synopsis in a review, I skipped National Anthem the first time I watched Season 1 (a couple years ago) due to the subject matter. Then I saw the episode referenced in an article about the Presidential debates: how the public gets all worked up about a hyped political spectacle, but the event itself is so disgusting that it leaves everyone disheartened and depressed. So I watched it. Distasteful, if I may make an understatement. But the point of the episode was dead on. A black mirror indeed, because our society casts a dark reflection.
I really thought the whole thing was a set up by the Royal Family to take the Prime Minister down a peg or two so I was kind of surprised the kidnapping really was real. The Duchess Kate stand-in was so horrible in the blackmail video that I figured that acting had to be intentionally bad.
After Kenny's computer is infected with malware, hackers record him masturbating and instruct him to commit criminal acts to block the distribution of the video. From there, he meets others who have also been blackmailed as the series of tasks gets more and more sinister, revealing a dark truth about Kenny.
