In most circumstances, you must purchase a ticket before you board a train. On most Amtrak trains, only the full, undiscounted, unrestricted fare will be available for purchase onboard the train. This is regardless of reservations made or fares previously quoted by ticket agents, Amtrak.com or elsewhere. Higher fares usually apply when purchasing tickets onboard the train. To secure the best available fare, passengers should purchase tickets prior to boarding the train.

* Advanced Amtrak reservations and tickets are required for Amtrak Northeast Regional trains during holiday blackout periods through Amtrak.com, the Amtrak app, or an Amtrak ticket agent. CTrail tickets will not be accepted on these trains during holiday blackout periods.

** CTtransit Express 950 buses accept CTrail single ride, weekly & monthly tickets for travel between New Haven Union Station, New Haven State Street Station, Meriden Station, and Hartford Union Station. 10-ride tickets cannot be accepted. A CTrail Hartford Line Plus Bus ticket is not required to ride Route 950, however, a Plus Bus ticket is required for use on most connecting bus routes in Hartford, Meriden & New Haven.

Please purchase your return trip tickets before boarding using the CTrail eTix app or a Ticket Vending Machine. One-way tickets may also be purchased on board Hartford Line trains with an additional surcharge. Cash or credit/debit cards are accepted onboard. All passengers purchasing tickets on board are requested to have exact change or small bills no larger than a $20 bill. CTrail customers who purchased tickets onboard and then board a connecting train on the New Haven Line must show their receipt or they will face a surcharge when purchasing the New Haven Line ticket onboard the train.

Please Note that when purchasing tickets, Metro-North has a different Senior/Disabled Fare/Ticketing Policy and rates. Reduced fares are not valid for connecting New Haven Line AM peak trains to Grand Central Terminal or Harlem 125th Street. Customers riding those trains with reduced fare tickets will be charged the difference between the reduced fare and the onboard peak fare by Metro-North.

Personal Care Attendants (PCAs - people employed to assist individuals with disabilities) are eligible to ride the CTrail Hartford Line trains free when accompanying a customer with a disability.

Amtrak Senior Public Relations Manager Olivia Irvin told Bay City News Service that the train derailed at 2:50 p.m. when it hit the tree. She said the train remained upright and all systems remained operable.

Every long-haul train between east of the Mississippi and the West Coast has had its wifi routers ripped out, also another Amtrak cut. You will be totally reliant on cell towers for your phone for reception. I still find it amazing how many dead spots there are across the country, especially on the long-haul cross-country Amtrak routes.

Aboard the California Zephyr, the train reached 9,000-feet at the highest point. On the Southwest Chief, you travel through high desert plains until you pass Flagstaff at an 8,000-foot elevation. No wonder my ears ached.

While there are a lot, and I mean a lot of photo apps to choose, I prefer Snapseed. Mostly because it is easy to figure out how to use it and it has all of the features useful while in transit. Need to remove an unsightly grey splotch that mars the otherwise beautiful white clouds and blue sky? Use the Healing or Brush tool and remove it.

Self-explanatory but still there are so many people who have never tried either of these ride-share apps. Five minutes before you are scheduled to arrive at your destination, order your ride on the app. Sometimes you can even schedule a pickup time.

Yes, I really do use all of these apps on every Amtrak trip. While I think the only absolutely necessary app would be the Amtrak app, all of these really help to make your Amtrak train trip even more enjoyable.

No refund or exchange credit is given if a customer boards a train at a station beyond, or detrains at a station before, the station from or to which he or she was reserved, or if the customer downgrades accommodations on the train. To receive a fare adjustment the customer must change the reservation before the train departs the original boarding station of that train. This restriction will not apply if there is a service disruption. Customers who downgrade accommodations or reduce the number in their party on board trains must obtain a Refund Authorization Form from the conductor.

Tracking your train track and departure information isn't the only feature available within the newly updated Amtrak app. You can stay efficient and germ-free by accomplishing the following tasks, all from your trusty smartphone:

Info Booth at Pease Lot: You can now pickup or drop off train passengers along the curbline in Pease Lot adjacent to the Info Booth. You'll need to stay with your vehicle and you'll be limited to standing for 15 minutes. Note that Burlington does have a no idling ordinance in effect.

There is a lot to know about booking with Amtrak, but there are some key features of the train service that make traveling via rail convenient. Amtrak's train tracker map and real-time status feature can each show commuters where Amtrak trains are at any given time, along with a range of key details.

With unexpected delays and cancelations being a normal part of Amtrak's yearly operations, travelers being able to track their train is a great way of remaining informed by knowing precisely where the train is and whether there is a delay. However, there are a few things to know about the Amtrak train tracker.

The first thing to know about the Amtrak Track Your Train Map is that, as one would expect, it shows every Amtrak train live. There are likely to be several dozen Amtrak trains in service at any given time.

Naturally, it would be pretty time-consuming for a commuter to pinpoint their train on the map, even if they have a good idea of the general area the train is in at any given time. That's why it's good to know how to quickly find a train by simply typing in a relevant detail in the search bar toward the top of the web page.

In this search bar (with the words 'Track A Train' to the left and 'Go' to the right), travelers can simply type the name or number of their train to find out where it is, along with additional key details.

Many Amtrak routes will have multiple trains operating at any given time. As a result, simply typing in a train's name (e.g. Cascades, Silver Star, etc.) may provide several results. Therefore, it's essential that travelers can differentiate between the various trains running along the same route at once. The best way to do so is for travelers to know the number of the train they are waiting on.

Along with using the search bar at the top of the web page to search a train by its name or number, it's also possible to check out the arrivals to and departures from a specific station by typing it in the search bar and hitting enter or clicking go.

Again, while commuters can find a train by exploring the map, simply searching for it by name or number using the search bar at the top of the web page can open details of a given train. Also, as mentioned earlier, knowing a train's number may be necessary to ensure commuters can find the right one.

By clicking on detailed train status (in the small box that appears after selecting a given train), it's possible to see the time it departed from its initial stop, the times it arrived at each stop after (assuming it has already reached other stops than the first), and whether it was on time or delayed upon reaching these stops.

The stops already covered will have the word 'arrived' at the bottom and all related text will appear in a light gray font. Beneath the stops already covered will be a list of future stops that the train is set to arrive at with its scheduled arrival time and estimated arrival time (which may differ from the scheduled arrival time if the train has experienced delays).

Another way of tracking the status of an Amtrak train is to click on the train status button on the home page (found near the top right of the home page). Here, commuters can search by train (with the train's number) or by searching the station.

The POINT is a contract-operated bus service managed by the Oregon Department of Transportation. The POINT is not operated by Amtrak or Greyhound but we work with both companies to sell our tickets to provide passengers with options to connect to the national network of trains and buses. Please note the following:

You can generally buy a ticket up until about 30 minutes before the bus leaves, but we recommend buying further in advance. Tickets can be purchased online, using mobile apps, over the phone, or in-person. Adult fares range from $3 to $52. Detailed instructions for purchasing tickets for travel between Grants Pass and Brookings and using the JCT bus bridge are listed at the bottom of the page.

Please note that reduced fares are not accepted on board westbound (inbound) weekday morning Peak trains. Please refer to the schedule for Westbound Peak versus Off-Peak travel times. Reduced fare One-Way Tickets are available for purchase through the CTrail eTix app and onboard CTrail Shore Line East trains with cash only (with no additional surcharge), as well as at the following stations: New London, Old Saybrook, and New Haven Union Station. The reduced fare applies ONLY to the CTrail Shore Line East ticket. Those connecting with the New Haven Line must show their receipt or will face a surcharge.
