Bundler and vendor gems

Is there a best practice regarding Bundler and vendor gems?
I did some quick searches on the web, but did not find any definitive
info.
What is the best way to let Bundler know, via Gemfile, to load a
vendor gem ?
If we have a 2.3.x Rails app and there are vendor/gems/some_gem,
should those gems be moved to another directory for example vendor/
bundler_gem/some_gem ?
What do you think?

At the bottom of http://gembundler.com/ it gives an example of using
the :path option to do what you need.
