Whileflat on my back recovering from surgery, I binged the first nine seasons of a beautiful and funny period drama Badehotellet (Seaside Hotel). Set in a small Danish hotel on the North Sea, the series starts in the summer of 1928 and follows guests (the wealthy from Copenhagen) and hotel staff through the end of World War II. As the outside world heads for disaster-after-disaster, summers at the seaside hotel remain (mostly) untroubled and unchanging.

Next, I stayed at historic (built in 1874) Brndums Hotel in the once-remote harbor town of Skagen. Hans Christian Andersen stayed here. Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen) wrote much of Out of Africa while staying here. The hotel was a favorite meeting place of the Skagen Painters who, attracted by the spectacular scenery and crystalline light, summered here at the end of the 1800s.

Several paintings given by artists in exchange for lodging still hang in the sitting rooms; the hotel donated more than 1,800 paintings to the nearby Skagens Museum. Rooms in the original hotel have shared baths or opt for ensuite rooms in The Annex. Open year round. broendums-hotel.dk/en/

Recently opened Strandhottelet Blokhus sits near windswept dunes and a huge expanse of white-sand beach (the largest in Europe, they say). Its 38 rooms have a nautical blue-and-white dcor and big old-fashioned windows. The organic, locally grown and freshly caught menu honors Danish seaside food culture. I heard that part of the upcoming season (the 10th) of Seaside Hotel was being filmed in North Zealand, often called the Danish Riviera. Sandy and serene, it is not like the wilds of North Jutland. I booked a room Hotel Hornbkhus. Built in 1904, it has 36 ensuite rooms and living rooms decorated in colorful Danish modern furniture. Vintage paintings and that distinctive Scandi blue-and-white porcelain hang on the walls. The small annex, called Villa Strand is right on the beach. The filming had wrapped by the time I arrived. I was sorry to have missed the excitement but glad for a relaxing weekend at the beach. Open year-round. hornbaekhus.com/en/
