Shabbat Hagadol - Parshat Achare Mot 5771

Shabbat Candles 7:11 PM

Friday evenings Mincha / Kabalat Shabbat: 10 minutes after candle lighting.
Erev Shabbat Mincha this week - 7:21 PM

Shabbat morning davening is at 9:15 AM every week.
Shabbat Afternoon Mincha
(after Kiddush & shiur)
at Z’man Mincha Gedola:
This week –
1:30 PM
-----------------------------------
 Shabbat Hagadol
Kiddush is being hosted this Shabbat by
Rochelle & Karl Miller
in honor of their daughter
Samantha’s birthday

------------------
This Shabbat is known as Shabbat Hagadol. Many people have the tradition to attend a special drasha on Shabbat Hagadol afternoon, and to read from “Avadim Hayinu” until “L’chol Avonotenu” in the Hagaddah on this Shabbat, as well.

                  Or Menorah
               Pesach 5771 Times and Halachot
By, Rabbi Doug Zelden

Maot Chitim should be given, and appointing someone to “sell your Chametz” should be taken care of, by Sunday night 4/17/11, or at the latest by Monday morning 4/18/11 before 10:11 AM.

Searching for the Chametz should take place on Sunday 4/17/10 after dark with a candle, feather, wooden spoon,
and paper bag. The Bracha Al Biur Chametz” and the first “Kol Chamira” are recited.
(Have in mind that the bracha counts for the “burning of the chametz” the next morning.)

All firstborn sons “B’chorim” should fast (which begins at 4:36am), or attend a siyum on Monday April 18, 2011.  Chametz should no longer be eaten after 10:11 AM.

The latest time for Burning the Chametz and reciting the second “Kol Chamira” is Monday morning 4/18/11
at 11:31 AM. (It is preferable to burn your chametz at the “Community Biur Chametz” this year at the
Joan Dachs Bais Yaakov parking lot,
3200 W. Peterson in Chicago, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, rather than in an alley.)

Candles may be lit right before the seder from an existing flame or at regular time from a match on the first night

of Pesach. (The same rule applies to the 7th night of Pesach.) All other nights, except Friday, must be from an
existing flame. (except for Shabbat)

Licht Bentching Schedule:
Monday-Erev Pesach 4/18/11:   7:15 PM (L’hadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov/Shehecheyanu)
Tuesday-Sheni  4/19/11:       after 8:26 PM  (L’hadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov/Shehecheyanu)
Friday-Shobbos Chol Hamoed  4/22/11: no later than 7:19 PM (L’hadlik Ner Shel Shabbat)
Sunday-Shevi’ee  4/24/11:     7:21 PM (L’hadlik Ner Shel Yom)
Monday-Acharon 4/25/11:   after 8:32 PM  (L’hadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov)

The Seder should not begin the first night until after 8:16 PM. No preparation for the second seder or dinner the eighth night should begin until after candle lighting time for that evening. Hand or Machine Shmurah Matzoh must be used at the seder, and it is preferable to use Romaine Lettuce rather than only ground horseradish for the majority of Marror, so you don’t get sick from eating the 1.8 ounces of horseradish needed at each seder. Zman Afikoman is before 12:50 AM at each Seder. We begin counting the Omer the second night of Pesach.

All through Pesach we add “Ya’aleh V’yavo” in the Amidah and in the Birkat Hamazon.
We no longer say “Mashiv Haruach U’morid Hagashem” beginning with Mincha on the first day of Pesach. If we say it by accident, we must repeat the Amidah, and omit “Mashiv Haruach”.  (Some replace it with “Morid Hatal”)

Some laws of Chol Hamoed Pesach:
All Kosher L’Pesach rules apply.
Beginning on Chol Hamoed we replace “Tal U’matar” with “V’ten Bracha” during “Barech Alenu”
in the  Amidah.
Those who wear Tfillin, usually do so without a Bracha. On the first day of Chol Hamoed, many wear the Tfillin until after the third Aliyah in the Torah reading, and on the other days they are removed before Hallel.
Clothing generally should not be mended.
Only necessary clothes washing should take place.
Writing should be kept to a minimum or avoided. Try to pay bills before the holiday starts.
Haircuts are forbidden. (Everyone should try to take a haircut before Pesach because of the Omer.)
Shaving is forbidden unless it would put your job in jeopardy.

Please remember that normally we Ashkenazim avoid Egg Matzoh products (Matzoh Ashirah) during the entire holiday unless health reasons make it hard to digest regular matzoh.
See the rabbi if you have any questions.

                                              ……..

If you have not sold your Chametz already please fill out the following sheet
and return it to the Rabbi’s by Saturday night:
