The Halachot of Purim
Week
In Adar everyone should give three half-dollar coins to tzedaka, commemoration of the “Machatzit HaShekel” given at the time of the Beit HaMikdash. There will be half-dollar coins available at the shul for this purpose on Taanit Esther & Purim. Purim Day Mincha will be at 12:35pm.
Before your S’eudah starts on Purim Day the following Mitzvot should be fulfilled. Please note that these Mitzvot can only be fulfilled during the day.
Matanot Laevyonim
Each person has an obligation to give charity to
two Jewish poor people.* While one can fulfill one’s obligation with a
very small gift, many try to provide each poor person with the money for a
Purim Seudah. The amount that one would spend on one’s own seudah (or one would
spend if they were going out to eat) is a fitting amount. This money will
be distributed to the poor & the ARK,
ChesedChicago Fund or Chicago Purim Fund on Purim Day.
Advance monies will go the poor in Israel through Od Yosef Chai.
*The Rabbi will be collecting Monday night and Tuesday and distributing the
funds on Tuesday
Mishloach Manot
The minimum requirement is to send two ready-to-eat food items to at least one person. Please remember that one cannot fulfill the Mitzvah of Mishloach Manot through any community-wide Shaloch Manot. Please be sure to send two foods to least one person during the day on Purim
Mourners:
Mishloach Manot is not sent to someone observing
mourning (an Avel), but can be sent to the spouse or family
of the Avel. A mourner should send Mishloach Manot to only
one other person by messenger.
Seudah
Everyone is obligated to take part in a festive Purim meal, usually eaten after Mincha. The meal must be started before sunset. Preferably, the bulk of the meal should be eaten by then. (Wine & Washing)
(If you are donating to Od Yosef
Chai for Matanot L’Evyonim please give the funds to the Rabbi by
Sunday Morning)
