Torah
Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Parshat Bo
The First Mitzvah given to Klal Yisrael to sanctify the moon and
count the months is in Parshat Bo.
The Ramban explains that the Torah referred to the months as "first",
"second" and so on, because the numbers refer to how many months the
Jews were removed from the moment when we were established as a people. This
helps focus our attention to the most important moment we had as a nation. It
also focuses us on something else; The months we now controlled (both in name
and in timing) dictate when holidays occur, when customs are performed, and
even when G-d judges us. The very first commandment is the one that empowers us
the most. The first commandment as a nation makes us partners with Hashem,
because although we didn't determine the holidays to celebrate, we do determine
when they are celebrated. So every time we celebrate Rosh Chodesh,
we should
celebrate our partnership with G-d, and our being empowered to individually
"name" the month as we, as a people, see fit

HALACHA CORNER
Wednesday
Night and Thursday is Tu B’Shvat!
No Tachanun is said on Thursday, or at Mincha on Wednesday.
To celebrate, it is a custom to eat Israeli Fruits, and many have the custom to
give Tzedakah
to the Jewish National Fund to plant new trees in Israel
in honor of the day.

Or Menorah
is partially open, with Minyanim and new guidelines.
COMPLIANCE: The following guidelines to be observed by all minyan
participants, are based upon consultation with Rabbinic leadership of the cRc,
IRF, OU, and Agudah, and medical health experts. These guidelines must be
followed, without exception. Those who are unable to follow these guidelines
will be asked not to participate in minyanim for the time being & continue
to daven at home.
Shabbat & Davening Times follow the same schedule as always.
ELIGIBILITY: As per the most recent
guidelines, no more than 15 people will be permitted at a minyan, and we are
limiting participation to regular attendees at least in High School. People over
65 with ailments must consult with their doctor to attend, but if healthy
and no risk may use their own judgement.
We will revise these guidelines as the organizations’ guidelines change.
-Chazan duties will first be given to a chiyuv for aveilut or a yahrzeit.
● Anyone who is experiencing any symptoms of illness or is high risk (fever,
coughing, aches, asthma/COPD, diabetes with fluctuating sugar levels, immune
system issues etc.), or has testing pending, or lives with someone who is ill
or has testing pending, may not attend.
-Anyone who is under quarantine must remain in quarantine and may not attend.
GENERAL PROCEDURES: All participants - enter & leave the building one at a
time.
EVERYONE including the Chazan and Ba’alei Koreh, must wear masks that cover
their nose and mouth at all times, and they must keep them secured upon their
nose and mouth throughout the entire time that they are in the shul.
- Everyone must wash their hands with soap and water, or use sanitizer.
-Participants must keep a distance of 5-6 feet between themselves and others at
all times, other than between family members from the same household.
-Daveners must remain in their seats without leaving their designated location
until minyan is over with no walking around/socializing during services. Available seating is set for social
distancing on all sides of the mechitza, for men. 4 women may attend and
separate 5-6 in the kitchen area.
-Please bring a siddur and/or chumash from home. The length of minyanim will be
kept to a minimum so Brachot & Psukei d’zimrah should be said at home or
after davening except Baruch Sh’amar, Ashre and Nishmat (Yishtabach on
weekdays) for Shabbat Shacharit minyanim. Ther’ll be no singing,
except Kel Adon & Etz Chaim.
● The Ba’al Koreh will get all aliyot, and do Maftir unless a Kohen, Levi or
Chiyuv want to come up. The Ba’al Koreh will do Glila, and the one who takes
out the Torah and returns it will do Hagba. There will be no kiddush nor any
food or beverage served or otherwise shared among participants. Bring your own
water bottle and dispose of it and all tissues. The restrooms will be limited
to urgent need. Please use your restroom at home before arriving.
-Once davening is complete, please leave the shul as quickly as possible, so
that we may disinfect & prepare for the next minyan. While it may be
difficult to resist socializing with others, please avoid doing so while inside
or outside near the shul doors.
-You must notify the Rabbi you plan to attend and that you are
eligible to,
so that the number count is 10-15 without delay.
*If you commit to attend you must be on time, and know you are counted
on!

Summary of Parshat Bo Rabbi Doug Zelden
1st Aliya: Moshe and
Aharon forewarned Pharoah about the 8th plague of Locust. His
advisors begged Pharaoh to consider Moshe's request, and Pharaoh attempted to
negotiate with Moshe and Aharon that the children should stay behind. When his
offer was refused, all negotiations broke down and Pharaoh chased Moshe and
Aharon away. Hertz Chumash pg. 248 Exodus
10:1
2nd Aliya: The Locust / Arbeh came
and swallowed up what was left in Mitzrayim (Egypt), but Pharaoh still refused
to send away the Jews. pg.249 v.12
3rd Aliya: Darkness / Choshech
enveloped Egypt for three days. Pharaoh told Moshe that he could take out his
people, but he had to leave the cattle behind. Moshe refused and Pharaoh
forewarned Moshe that he could not come to him again. In truth, the next time
they saw each other would be after the Death of the First Born, when Pharaoh
went to Moshe. pg. 251 v.24
4th Aliya: Moshe forewarned the
Egyptians about the Makas B’choros – 10th plague. In ch.12:2
Hashem (G-d) commanded Moshe and Aharon with the very first Mitzvah to be given
to the Nation, Hachodesh Hazeh Lachem (also read at Parshas Hachodesh) The very
first Korban Pesach was described along with the Mitzvos of Matzoh, Chametz,
and Pesach. pg. 252 ch.11:4
5th Aliya: The Bnai Yisroel
were commanded to mark the inside of their doors with the blood of the Korban
Pesach. pg. 257 ch.12:21
6th Aliya: The plague of the Death
of the First Born left Mitzrayim in mourning. Pharaoh and the Egyptians hurried
the Jews out of Mitzrayim. Approximately 600,000 men besides women, children,
and the elderly (3,000,000 total) as well as about 1,000,000 non-Jews (the Eruv
Rav) left Mitzrayim during the Exodus. It was the year 2448, and the Pasuk says
that the Jews had been in Mitzrayim for 430 years. (actually - exactly 430
years from the Bris Bain Habisarim - The Covenant Between the Halves) The laws
of the Korban Pesach were reviewed. pg. 258
v.29
7th Aliya: The Parsha concludes with
a review of the laws of Pesach as well as introducing the Mitzvos of Pehter
Chamor - the commandment to exchange all first born, male donkeys for a
sheep; Pidyon Haben- redeeming the first born male child; and the
Mitzvah of Tefillin, which is one of the four Parshios in Tfillin. pg.
260 ch.13:1
Maftir Aliyah: We repeat the last three verses. pg. 262 v.14
Haftorah Bo - Jeremiah 46:13 pg.263 : This week's Haftorah is from
Yirmiyah. The rise of Nevuchadnetzar and Babylon to world dominance heralded
the destruction of Mitzrayim (Egypt) eight centuries after the time of the
Exodus. Mitzrayim had been a dominant power in the region for many centuries
and saw the decline of Israel as an opportunity to gain even greater power.
Israel, concerned about her own fate in the face of Babylon's onslaught, turned
to Egypt for help. Yirmiyahu had already predicted in last week's Haftorah that
Bavel would turn its fury and strength against Egypt, conquering her and
dispersing her inhabitants. This would force Israel to stand-alone and meet her
destiny. Israel's only option for salvation would have to come from Hashem
(G-d) and Hashem alone. In this week's Haftorah Yirmiyahu continues his
prophecy of the destruction of Mitzrayim. This is the obvious connection to our
Parsha in which the proud and arrogant Pharaoh is bought to his knees by the
awesome hand of Hashem. So too, Bavel, acting as Hashem's agent, would punish
Mitzrayim for her continued arrogance and pride.
The Bnai Yisroel (Jewish
nation) would be directly impacted by Mitzrayim's destruction; however, they
are reassured that Hashem will ultimately deliver them, so long
as they keep
their faith and trust in Hashem's promise.
