 Torah Thoughts from Rabbi Doug…
Parshat Ha’azinu
Parshat Ha’azinu, Deuteronomy 32, is the shortest parasha in the Torah. It consists of only one chapter of just fifty-two lines. The first 47 lines are a poem (or a song; it’s not clear which medium it was intended to be) that Moses sings at the threshold of the Promised Land, within hearing distance of all the people of Israel. Ha’azinu hashamayim, he begins. “Give ear, O heavens, let me speak; let the earth hear the words I utter!” Moses calls upon “heaven and earth,” i.e., everything, to witness that God is true and just; it’s Israel who is deceitful. In beautiful poetic language, the poem describes how God brought Israel out of the wilderness and fed Israel from the bounties of the land. God created and sustained the people in the desert. Israel (called here Jeshurun) became complacent and arrogant and worshipped other gods, spurning God’s covenant. The poem describes God’s anger and the punishments which Israel will face because of its perfidy. The poem ends with denouncing the useless gods of the Canaanites. After the end of the poem, Moses tells the people that they must remain devoted to the Torah, since “this is not a trifling thing for you; it is your very life.” The parasha closes dramatically with God’s directing Moses to ascend Mount Nebo and look at the Promised Land. God tells Moses that he will die on the mountain. Deuteronomy 32:7 states, “Ask your father, he will inform you, Your elders, they will tell you,” is the basis for the commandment to kindle the Chanukah lights According to the Talmud (Shabbat 23a), this verse says that your father and elders will tell you of God’s miracles, obligating you to light the Chanukah candles. This parasha has another connection with Chanukah: Six times, it refers to God as a “Rock”; and the expression “tzur yeshuati” – the “Rock of my salvation” –
was incorporated into the Chanukah song “Maoz Tzur.”

Shabbat Shalom!

Summary of Ha’azinu / Shabbat Shuva     By, Rabbi Doug Zelden

Deuteronomy 32:1                                                    Page 896  in the Hertz Chumash

1st Aliya: Moshe begins by describing the presence of Hashem in nature as being as evident as the
rain or dew that nourish the fields and gardens. G-d is entirely just, always good, always compassionate and forgiving. Therefore, all destruction and negativity must be ascribed directly to the ill fated decisions
and actions of His children.  Pg. 896 Ch.32:1

2nd Aliya:
The Jew must always remember that he was chosen from among all other nations to be nurtured by the direct ministrations of the Creator. We were born in a "desolate, howling, wasteland"
and protected till we were able to assume responsibility for our unique relationship with the Creator of heaven and earth.  Pg. 897 Ch.32:7

3rd Aliya: Unfortunately, humankind's tendency is to forget the degree of their dependency upon Hashem and to create the illusion of self sufficiency and independence.
"Yeshurun thus became fat and rebelled..." Pg. 898 Ch.32:12

4th Aliya: We will then be punished with exile and persecution. Chased from our land and sold into slavery, the Chosen People will experience what it means to be independent
of Hashem's direct protection and benevolence. Pg. 899 Ch.32:19

5th Aliya: However, the other nations will fail in the very same manner that we did. They will assume that their ability to enslave the Chosen People and ravage Israel is proof of G-d's impotence and their own prowess and strength. Therefore, they will be punished and destroyed and the Chosen People will again recognize Hashem's primacy and control. Pg. 900 Ch.32:29

6th Aliya: Moshe's song ends with the Jewish people singing forth their acceptance and understanding of divine purpose and justice. Pg. 901 Ch.32:40

7th Aliya: Moshe presents the entire "song" to the nation and reemphasizes that the condition for keeping the Land is adherence to Torah and serving Hashem. Pg. 902 Ch.32:44

Maftir Aliya: We repeat the last five verses. Pg. 903 Ch.32:48

Haftorah Shuva      Pg. 904 in the Hertz Chumash

Hoshea 14:2-10; Yoel 2:11-27; Micha 7:18-20

This Shabbat is known as Shabbat Shuva - the Shabbat of Return because the Haftorah begins with the words, "Shuva (Return) Yisroel to G-d" Gleaned from both Hoshea and Yoel, the prophets describe G-d's desire to forgive His children, if only they will repent. The fast of Yom Kippur is mentioned as well as the rewards awaiting us if we proclaim G-d in our midst.
