Torah Thoughts From Rabbi Doug

Torah Thoughts for Shabbat Korach

Chicago Jewish News
TORAH COLUMN – Parshat Korach –

Intelligence & Morality

Without a doubt Judaism places a tremendous amount of importance on intelligence and education. We are called the people of the book. To be a Torah scholar is an unparalleled ideal. We produce a disproportionate amount of professionals in almost every field. How many jokes have we all heard that go something like this, “once there was a Jew an “XXX” and a “OOO”, the “XXX” or “OOO” parts are interchangeable with almost everyone else on the planet. The bottom line of all those jokes is that in the end the Jew outsmarts them all. What then is the Jewish position on the
importance of intelligence? Does Judaism teach that intelligence is the highest
value above all other values?

The answer to that question is, that while Judaism places great stress on intelligence, proper moral behavior and the desire to do good are higher values. Judaism has always recognized that intelligence without morality can be downright dangerous. We need look no further than the greatest civilizations that gave so much knowledge to the world yet wreaked untold destruction. They taught us that the most civilized and intelligent people could concoct the most intricate forms of evil.

In Judaism character development is far more important than intellectual development. Our Rabbis long ago in “Pirkei Avot” aka “Ethics of the Fathers” described the wise person not as one who possesses superior intelligence but rather one who “conquers their desires” (see Ethics of the Fathers 4:1). Maimonides in his code when describing the qualities of a Torah scholar states the following, “A Torah scholar should speak gently to everyone… he should greet everyone promptly… he should judge everyone favorably… he should seek peace and pursue peace… (Maimonides Deot 5:7). What’s remarkable is that no mention is made of intelligence. The emphasis is not on what the person knows but on what kind of a person they are. I think Maimonides (who was highly intelligent) saw the limits of intelligence.

The prophet Jeremiah when describing how the children of Israel have strayed from G-d echoes these sentiments in a very powerful statement where he says the following, “For my people are stupid, they have not recognized me. They are foolish children and they are not discerning. They are intelligent at doing evil, but know not how to do good” (Jeremiah 4:22). The prophet knew the dangers of intelligence without morality. He spoke about those who used their intelligence to oppress and destroy. In the end he calls those who are smart but do evil stupid and foolish.

We have many examples in the prophets of individuals who used their intelligence for bad. One that comes to mind is the story Amnon and Tamar that appears in the book of Samuel. I quote to you the beginning of that story, “Abshalom the son of David had a sister who was beautiful and her name was Tamar. Amnon the son of David loved her. Amnon lusted to the point of illness after his sister Tamar for he knew she was a maiden but it seemed impossible for Amnon to do anything with her. Amnon had a friend named Yonadav the son of Shimi who was the brother of David. He was an exceedingly smart man” (Samuel 2;13:1-3). I cannot quote the entire story but it ends with Amnon’s friend Yonadav contriving a plan for Amnon to lay with his sister (they were brother and sister through their father David but had different mothers).
When Amnon manages to be with her alone she pleads with him saying,
“No my brother do not violate me for such a thing is not done in Israel. Do not commit this despicable act. Where will I go with my shame? And you, you would be considered in Israel as one of the despicable men (Ibid verses 12-13). But he is unable to control his lust and in the end we are told the following, “But he refused to head her voice. He overpowered her and violated her and lay with her” (Ibid verse 14).

It is a story of sin, rape, and shame. But what must also make us tremble is that Amnon’s best friend contrived the plot. That best friend Yonadav is described as an exceedingly smart man.
Our Rabbis in the Talmud are quick to explain,
“He was wise to do evil” (Talmud Sanhedrin 21a). Indeed without a sense of morality and the desire to do good, intelligence is at best futile and at worse dangerous.

Another good example of this problem is our weekly Parsha entitled “Korach”. The portion is about a man who challenges the leadership of Moses and Aaron and manages to sway a large group of people to his side. The question that arises is how in the world did Korach think he could succeed. It is one thing to try and overthrow a failing leader, but Moses was beloved to the nation, their redeemer. Another question is why did he wait so long to attempt his coup, it takes place long after they have left Egypt? The Ramban (Nahmanides) offers an interesting answer stating the following, “Behold nothing bad befell all of Israel when they were in the desert. They loved Moses their leader dearly and listened to his words. Any person who would rebel against Moses, they would surely stone. But when they came to the desert of Paran and sinned with the spies and it was decreed that the entire nation would die in the wilderness (and not enter the land of Israel) then they became bitter. It is at this opportune time that Korach rebelled against Moses” (Ramban Bamidbar 16:1).

Indeed Korach too was an intelligent man. Our Rabbis explain that in the beginning of his dispute with Moses he attempts to outsmart him in matters of Jewish law (see Rashi on verse 1). His plot, as the Ramban suggests, is carefully timed with great precision. He comes from a well to do and prominent family. He is a wise and respected member of the community. But in the end the ground swallows him because he uses his intelligence for personal gain and to create chaos. He speaks eloquently and intelligently before Moses, but his words are deceptive and empty. He seeks not the good of the nation but good for himself. His is another story about the futility and danger of intelligence without morality.

In the end it is Kind David who places wisdom in its proper context when he says,
“The beginning of wisdom is the fear of G-d” (Tehilim 111:10). Wisdom begins not with knowledge but with a sense of pursuing that, which is right in the eyes of G-d. Wisdom must come with a sense of responsibility to others, and with the constant reminder that it is more important to be good than to be smart. In one of his books, author Rabbi Harold Kushner writes, “When I was young I admired smart intelligent people but as grow older I admire good and kind people”. His statement merely echoes what Judaism has been teaching for thousands of years.
