Pillars on the buildings - cut and damaged?

Does anyone know what happened to many of the pillars?  They are cut / damaged like they were vandalized (this was a few weeks ago).  I thought it may have been a mower or trimmner at first, but many were cut (including mine), that would be impossible to hit with that equipment.  Was someone checking to see if they need to be replaced?  Thanks~ mark
