Hello!

I was just curious as to how you are conducting and documenting your surgical counts?  For example, are you using tablets or WOWs for hardware and documentation or are you utilizing dry erase boards and paper for the counts and then indicating whether the counts are correct or not in the electronic record.  My facility is transitioning from paper to ORM this fall and we are trying to decipher how we would like to proceed with our surgical counts.  Thank you!

Careen,

We are using WOWs in each room.  However, we still use a paper count sheet to tally everything up.  At the end, the results are documented on the standard count fields in the record.  It is really just a summary, while the details are on the paper.  We do not save the count sheets afterwards – it is just a worksheet to use during the case.  Let me know if you need more info.

Counts are entered into the ORM module in Meditech.  If PC is not available then temporarily jotted on paper.  We use HP Profile PCs now.  Light and portable with clear display and wipe them down with wipes before and after use.  Prior to, our facilities have had success with netbooks as well.

Careen,
We currently document in ORM and the counts are listed there. You can add any information that you want as there is ample areas to do so. You can choose what to document as well as how many counts you want to perform. We use a dry erase board in the room for the count and then document at the end in Meditech.
We use Fugitsu and Panasonic tablets and have cords to charge the tablets in each room. At night we clean them and put them in a locked computer storage cabinet kept in PACU with extra cords to charge overnight.
Everyone still uses paper for notes during the case.
Hope this helps!
