Hi Ben!

I'm very much interested in someone taking care of orlandopython.com.
I helped organize some of the first OPUG meetings, but quickly found
that I don't really have time to dedicate to a group like this.

You mentioned that you have "basic python experience" and that you are
"delving into Drupal". I'm copying this to the list to let everyone
else voice their opinions, but I would really like it if the
orlandopython.com website was run using python, rather that php. It's
not a holy war, just a suggestion.

I also don't really desire to sys admin someone else's website, so
whomever does takeover the domain should be ok with hosting the site.
Let me know what you think (and I'm sure everyone else will voice
their opinions!).

I would consider myself a very basic and beginner when it comes to
python, so I wouldn't be able to do the site in python. If I was more
confident and knowledgeable with python, I would be more than happy to
do it, but I just can't at this stage.

I would also be perfectly willing to host the site and take care of
all of the admin duties. I feel comfortable enough with Drupal to get
a site going with it and very confident with Concrete5, which are both
LAMP CMS's as you probably know. I can just add it as another domain
with my existing host.

I wanted to come to the meeting tomorrow, but my schedule doesn't permit it.

I apologize for sending the same message to both of your email
accounts. I wasn't sure the best way to get in touch with you earlier.

Get with the group and see what it is you guys are looking for as far
as content as well. That would dictate whether I use Concrete5 or
Drupal as each have their own applications.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I could get a site up on App Engine, and give admin rights to whoever
wants to help maintain it. Then no one has to worry about hosting it,
per se.

I'd be down for that.

Nix that. App Engine won't let me log in. Unless someone has server
space available, we might have to build the thing on PHP.

I have ec2 cohost space available. But that would mean no OS access for anyone else for now.

I'd like to see a python host as well. -1 for PHP.

I'd be glad to donate hosting to keep it in django.

Hi there!

I highly recommend using Posterous[1] to begin a community website. It's simple and take only a couple of minutes to setup, and a couple of hours to master the tool. We've being using it for our PythOnRio[2] website and so far it has been very easy to everybody contribute to the site.

Sure. I could whip something together. We just need something to link
to Twitter and the Google group, and list upcoming events?

It would be useful to have a blog where we can talk about our events
and other things of interest.

I just a second look at posterous, and I think it might be the perfect
way to set up the OPUG web site. It's really easy to use, and allows
for easy collaboration. I'll go ahead and set one up and you all can
tell me what you think.

Here's what I came up with: http://opug.posterous.com/

I think it looks good, but I have a few questions. How are we going to handle posting on the blog? Will this be something that all opug members have the possibility of doing, would someone manage it and allow users to submit posts, or is there a better method for this?

Also, I would love to include the next meeting on the sidebar with a link to a calendar (google calendar?) for OPUG. That way we don't have to rely on the latest post being about the next meeting.

Thanks so much for setting this up!

Jamal,

Posterous enables you to add contributors.

Here in Rio, I share the administrative login and password with other 2 very active community members to avoid centralization problems, and *anyone* with the desire to contribute to the blog is added to the contributors list.

By the time we setup PythOnRio's blog, I've added 10 contributors. :D

Henrique,

That's a great feature, thanks for sharing that. That makes it so much easier to have the group contribute. Do you have any procedures you follow before letting someone be a contributor? Or do you generally allow them if they request it?

Thanks for sharing your experience with us :)

Jamal,

We generally allow any community member that requests access.

Joshua,
If we're all ok with this, can you get with me to set up the domain?

Jamal,
I've added you as a contributer. Can you get with me about embedding
the Google Calendar?
