Its not true

I tried & got the following message

orkut is unique, because it's an organically growing network of trusted
friends. That way we won't grow too large, too quickly and everyone
will have at least one person to vouch for them.

If you know someone who is a member of orkut, that person can invite
you to join as well. If you don't know an orkut member, wait a bit and
most likely you soon will.

We look forward to having you as part of the orkut community.

Trying to get an Orkut invite is almost impossible, I've been trying
forever. I even got excited that I heard Google was opening Orkut for
free registration, but it wasn't true, at least not for the US.

I think you are right. I tried as well and got the same messages. First
I thought it's due to my language and the havent done it yet for German
language interface users. But now as you state the same I dont beleieve
it's true.

As far as I can tell, there is still no way to access Orkut without an
invite. I just went to the site and tried logging in with my google
account and it asked me to link my existing orkut account to my google
account. There was a link below for "Don't have an orkut account?"
that points to http://www.orkut.com/JoinNetwork.aspx that still states:

Ok, here we go again. I posted a request yesterday asking how I (an
Orkut member) can send invites to new would-be members. Haven't
received any reply yet. Please advise because I would like to help and

when you requested to be a member of Orkut-Invites group did you check the box to receive emails? If you did you should see lots of Orkut requests in your email box or you can just go into the Orkut-Invites group and see all the requests that people leave then all you have to do is copy and paste the email addresses of the people making the request go to your Orkut click on the Friends tab and to the left you will see where it says "Invite a friend to Orkut" put the First name and first letter of the last name in there and then add the email address for the person you are sending the invite to and click send then leave a reply on the group message "Invite sent" and send in that email that is all there is to it.  If you don't understand these instructions let me know I will try and explain better. good luck

I think you can use your google account to sign on Orkut, but you still
need to join Orkut by invitation before you can link your google
account with Orkut account.
