As an obeisance to Sri Venkateswara, a form of Lord Vishna, the students of Odissi Dance Academy Mysore will be presenting a few Odissi dance items in the premises of Lakshmi Venkateramana Swamy temple, on KRS road, V. V. Mohalla, on Saturday the 26th May 2012 evening from 7 pm to 8 pm. Kindly visit the temple with your family to have darsan of the Lord and also enjoy watching the Odissi dances. The programme will be as below:
1)Mangalacharana: Shantakaram Bhujangasayanam ---- by Sigma Satabdi, a life member of OAM, a bright scholar and a brilliant software engineer.
This is an invocatory piece based on the popular sloka, Shantakaram Bhujagashayanam written by the Sanskrit poet Shankaracharaya is in praise and prayer of Lord Vishnu. 'Shantakaram' in Sanskrit means 'the embodiment of peace'. The destroyer of evil powers, Vishnu gives peace and prosperity to the mankind.
"I bow to Lord Vishnu the One Master of the Universe, who is ever peaceful, who reclines on the great serpent bed, from whose navel springs the Lotus of the Creative Power, who is the Supreme Being, who supports the entire universe, who is all-pervading as the sky, who is dark like the clouds and has a beautiful form; the Lord of Lakshmi, the lotus-eyed One, whom the yogis are able to perceive through meditation, He, who is the destroyer of the fear of Samsar. I surrender to such great Lord."
The dance piece is choreographed by Padmashree Late Guru Pankaj Charan Das and the music is composed by Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Dash.
2) Sthayee:- It is a pure form of Odissi Dance presented by the students of Odissi Dance Academy Mysore. Also known as Battu Nrutya, is an item of pure Nrutya (Dance) and remains the most difficult item of Odissi dance. The dance begins with a series of sculpture like poses depicting actions of playing Veena, Venu (flute), Manjira and Mardala that brings out the interrelationships between this dance and the dance sculptures adorning the temples of Orissa.
Choreography – Guru Ajay Kumar Champati, the teacher of Odissi Dance Academy Mysore, dancers - Preethi, Apeksha and Prerana.
3) Basanta Pallavi - The next item of this evening’s programme is Basanta Pallavi presented by Preethi, a senior student of Odissi dance Academy Mysore. A pure dance item in which raga Basanta is elaborated through eye movements, body postures & intricate footwork. Pallavi literally means “blossoming”. This is applicable not only to the dance, but also to the music, which accompanies it. Pallavi starts with slow, graceful & lyrical movements of the eyes, neck, and torso & feet and slowly builds in a crescendo to climax in a fast tempo at the end.

4) Srita Kamala - It is an Odissi abhinaya based on the song taken from the Gita Govinda of Jayadev.
Srita Kamala Kucha Mandala (“he who rests on Kamala’s bosom”) is in praise of Lord Krishna.
"Glories to Lord Krishna, the Supreme God! Your eyes are like lotus petals and your face shines like the whorl of the Sun. You're the destroyer of the demoniac Kaliya serpent. You eliminated the demons Madhu, Mura and Narak. You're the beloved of all living entities. You smashed the greatest asura, the ten-headed Ravana. You are the maintainer of the three worlds.I offer my humble obeisance at your lotus feet. Please bless me by your limitless mercy."
Music is composed by Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra and the dance choreography is by Padma Vibhushan Late Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
