'Poverty no hurdle to success' Son of tea vendor clinches 34th rank
in Civil Services
Tuesday May 23 2006 11:37 IST

PARADIP: A sleepy hamlet, Singarpur under Balikuda block is celebrating
the success of their son.

Manoj Sahoo, son of a tea-stall owner, has secured 34th rank in the
Indian Civil Services Examination. Manoj notched the position with
Agriculture as his subject.

He credits the success to his parents, without whose support, he would
not have reached the position.

I earn a meagre amount by selling tea from my rickety tea stall but
that did not stop me from educating Manoj and giving him all that he
aspired for, says his father Babaji.

Manoj did not let poverty discourage him to study and fulfil his
father's dream of becoming a schoolteacher. A respectable job for the
village youths.

Manoj not only worked hard towards achieving that goal but also put in
extra efforts to help the family.

While he was studying in Sailabala High School at Panchupandav, he also
took classes at Science Study Centre, Jagatsinghpur to meet his
education expenses.

After clearing Class X, Manoj joined Swami Vivekananda Memorial College
at Jagatsinghpur and went on to do B.Sc Agriculture from College of
Agriculture and Technology, Chipilima, Sambalpur and M.Sc in
Agriculture from Junagarh University, Gujarat. He secured a gold medal
in M.Sc.

After PG, on the advice of a friend he went to New Delhi and prepared
for the Civil Services, without coaching. He was one of the three-lakh
aspirants for the job. My hard labour has borne fruit.

Now days almost all the IAS aspirants attend coaching classes and pay
hefty amount but I never joined coaching. It is also a myth that only
English medium students get the coveted job, Manoj states.

What better could it have been for this village boy par excellence,
than getting the coveted IAS?

Manoj was a bright student and by clearing the IAS he has brought
laurels to the village and the district, said Judhistir Das, Manoj's
teacher in Sailabala High School. On Sunday, the villagers welcomed him
with garlands and tears of joy.

At 26, he has tasted success and set an example for thousands of others
who aspire to achieve this position but fail to do so.

His gems of success, poverty cannot be a hurdle if you have the
determination and work hard towards achieving the goal.
