GANDHI UNDER SOUTH AFRICAN SKIES

Next week Origins Centre presents the talk ‘Gandhi under South African Skies’ by Kirti Menon, great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, chairperson of the Gandhi Committee and Registrar of Wits University.

Her talk, along with photographs, will focus on personal family memories of Gandhi, as well as explore the revolutionary ‘weaponry’ developed by the world icon, much of it honed and mastered in South Africa

The story of Gandhi begins in India, moves to England and South Africa before returning to the Indian subcontinent. His 20 years spent in South Africa transformed the shy barrister into a charismatic and powerful leader.  It is often said that the famous incident of eviction from the first-class compartment of a train and his experiences of high levels of discrimination, triggered in Gandhi the spark that would set the world on fire. His long years in South Africa have led historians like James Brown to comment: "South Africa was the forge where he beat out his ideals and his technique of leadership."

Ms Menon has a BA degree in English Literature, a Diploma in Journalism, Honours degrees in Literature and Applied Linguistics, and an MBA.  She has held a number of positions in Higher Education both in government and the education sector.
