A JUST SOCIETY: A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF THE TRUTH & RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

The Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s goal to motivate healing through understanding was the inspiration for a provocative and moving series of 48 paintings, produced by South African-American artist Madelaine Georgette, recently donated to Wits University by the artist.

The collection, titled ‘A Just Society’, will be exhibited between 22 August and 29 September 2012 at the Origins Centre.  It will be open to the public on Mondays - Fridays from 09h00-17h00 and on Saturdays from 09h00 - 13h00.

Georgette conceived the work to show American audiences the ground-breaking, extensive and courageous testimony of ordinary South Africans who chose a road to peace rather than perpetuating cycles of violence. ‘A Just Society’ is divided into four phases.  The first explains apartheid society and it’s myriad divisions, physical and socio-economic barriers; the second looks at the impact of apartheid and the war of liberation on women and children; the third illustrates institutional collaboration with apartheid law; and finally, the artist examines the concepts of truth, justice and reconciliation.

The artist will deliver a lecture on her work on Tuesday evening, 28 August, as well as conduct a walkabout on Saturday morning, 1 September.  Details and booking instructions follow:
