I am trying to create a new database using the orientDB web portal. But it always says 401 unauthorized. What is the default root password? I don't remember setting anything

You should be prompted to enter the password the first time you started the OrientDB via console by running "bin/server.sh" (or "bin/server.bat"). If you missed that step, I think you can set a plain version of the password in the "config/orientdb-server-config.xml" (under "<users>") or maybe remove the "<users>" and the "<isAfterFirstTime>" entries and rerun the server via console to be prompted for the password again.

There's also a bit of tutorial here: https://orientdb.com/docs/last/gettingstarted/Tutorial-Run-the-server.html
