Here's a solution to challenge 14 (ladder) that works reliably:

e1 + e0 => e8e6
x8y1 => x3y9
x9 + y6 => x2y3
x2 + x0 => x4x5
x4y7 => x8 + y3
x5 + y3 => x6y7

By making the molecule symmetric before taking the next atom, it
doesn't matter which side it bonds from.

But I get the same 'middles should have 3 bonds' error. Oh dear. I
don't remember seeing this before. I'm afraid I haven't looked at the
code for a while so I can't promise to correct this problem.
