What is sonible smart:reverb?

smart:reverb is an intelligent plugin that delivers custom-tailored reverb by adjusting its processing to the individual characteristics of the input material. In addition, smart:reverb creates an intuitively navigable reverb matrix that helps users quickly find the right sound.

Sonible's approach to computing reverb is based on the source signal rather than working with presets or pre-recorded impulse responses. This is a new way that meets the uniqueness of every creation.

The smart:engine constitutes the core of smart:reverb. It is an A.I.-based, content-aware system designed on the basis of psychoacoustic principles and extensive hands-on mixing experience.

I can't speak highly enough about the endless possibilities of bx_rooMS. I tried it on a ballad and it was super transparent sounding and doesn't wash out unless you want it to. To me, it's a very different type of ambience sound compared to normal reverb. I LIKE.

A great reverb for creating spaces that don't necessarily try to emulate the classic algorithms. With a clean sound that doesn't command too much attention to itself (in a good way!), it allows for easy integration into mixing. The weird side of this plugin is what gives it a place in my sound design bag of tricks.

Great sounding reverb plugin that finally gives me full control over the stereo image of the reverb signal. Instead of using a separate M/S EQ on the bus channel of my reverb, I have it all built in here, so that saves time and CPU power. Besides that, the layout is great and very straightforward, making the reverb setup a walk in the park. Thumbs up!

Reverb and M/S! Why did this not happen before? They are the mixing equivalent of Burger and Bun, Fish and chips or Sausage and Currywurst... With the stereo control and some serious EQ options, this has to be one of the most sculpt-able reverb systems about.

Man, this thing is ridiculous! After a few hours of playing with bx_rooMS, all I can say is that it's fantastic. Absolutely full control over every single relevant parameter of an FX processor! This is a home run! Big time!

After just a few button presses after instantiating the reverb, I was able to get a more realistic room sound than I've ever been able to get before. In the past when I've wanted to get a really authentic, quality room sound, I usually had to use a combination of reverb and delay units to get it, and had to play around a lot with the early reflections. But this thing sounded really beautiful to me in just a few seconds.

Plugin Alliance have released the Brainworx bx_rooMS reverb plugin. This new plugin is a mid-side reverb and has been designed in conjunction using TrueSpace technology developed by spatialization wizard Thomas Fiedler of Fiedler Audio. As part of the MS toolkit in bx_rooMS there is mid-side parametric filtering, panning and width control of the reverb's stereo field.

Unlike conventional algorithmic reverbs, bx_rooMS doesn't rely on a small number of algorithms to create virtual spaces with different sizes. Instead, its embedded TrueSpace technology produces a continuous gradation of algorithms that recreate a virtually infinite number of room sizes and shapes.

Quick Select buttons are there to provide a starting point for the desired type of space and its size. The Room Shape slider adjusts the reverb's spatial dimensions to produce sounds ranging from smooth and natural to metallic and artificial. The Source Distance control moves the dry signal farther into the virtual room, while the Directivity control adjusts how much each side of a stereo input signal is fed into the opposite reverb channel. Modulation controls lend subtle movement to natural ambience or, at extreme settings, can produce dive-bombing reverb and other pitch-shifting effects. Other controls adjust all the fundamental parameters you would need for a reverb plugin, including reverb time, room size, pre-delay, and low- and high-frequency damping. The reverb's bit depth can also be progressively lowered to emulate classic reverbs from yesteryear.

The wet signal can be soloed to allow more discerning adjustments of reverb parameters. Clicking the Input Bypass button temporarily mutes the reverb's input, assisting evaluation of the reverb tail as it naturally fades out. The Fix Mix control locks the current wet/dry balance as different presets are loaded for audition. Many controls have dedicated bypasses for making instant, easy comparisons.

Brainworx plugins, as well as all other Plugin Alliance products, are provided in AAX native, VST and AU formats for Mac OS 10.8 or higher and Windows 7 through 10. All Plugin Alliance products are available as fully functional 14-day demos at Plugin-Alliance.com.

Before beginning the actual mix, I set up some essential effects to speed up the process. I always have my reverbs and delays ready before mixing. For this project, I used a wooden room, a slap delay, a micro pitch doubler effect, and a hall reverb (which is actually a plate reverb). These were achieved using the bx_room for the wooden room effect, a simple 16th note delay for the slap, the Byome (Bio-Me) for the micro pitch, and a large thin plate setting for the hall.

The first step was to clean up the vocals using the bx_digital V3. I started with a low cut around 100 Hz, which helped remove any muffled sounds. Then, I used a shelf to roll off muddy frequencies, starting from around 800 Hz. This simple adjustment made a significant difference in clarity.

Next, I used the Noveltech Vocal Enhancer. Setting it to a lead vocal and dialing it back slightly, I noticed it added a nice cohesion to the vocal track. This plugin seems to focus on lower frequencies, further cleaning up the sound.

For compression, I chose the Purple Audio MC77, an emulation of the classic 1176 compressor. I set it to a fast release, a slow attack, and a 4:1 ratio, aiming for about 3 dB of gain reduction. Feel free to compress even more depending on what kind of sound you are going for. This step added a lot of character to the vocals, making them more present and cohesive.

After compression, I brought in the Bettermaker EQ for some final touches. I love its Pultec-style boost, which adds a nice shine to the vocals. I also used its parametric EQs for any additional tweaks.

A crucial step in vocal mixing is de-essing. For this, I used the 902 De-esser, ensuring that any noise features were turned off. This is a famous hardware de-esser that has been around for years. In fact superstar mixer Manny Marroquin uses it on ever mix. The de-esser effectively tamed any harsh sibilance without affecting the vocal tone.

I then introduced my pre-set effects. The key here was subtlety; I wanted to add depth and dimension without making the effects too noticeable. The wooden room, slap delay, and micro pitch were adjusted to be just audible enough to enhance the vocal without dominating.

An important aspect of mixing is dynamic automation. For instance, I automated the plate reverb to turn off during verses and kick in during the pre-chorus and chorus. This technique adds a lift and a sense of progression to the song.

Plugin Alliance has lainched Bettermaker BM60 reverb plugin, which is designed around the algorithm of the iconic 80s digital reverb hardware, Lexicon PCM 60. This new plugin aims to recreate the distinctive studio reverb sound of the 80s, a sound that has been a staple in high-end studios worldwide.
