This is a call for a Research Assistant to work with activist Aruna Roy(Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, School for Democracy) on a 2-year fellowship. As my rewarding and valuable commitment to work with her draws to an end, I (Saba) have taken on the responsibility of finding a person who will work with Arunaji over the next two years.
First, a little bit about my enjoyable experience through this fellowship.
This is a fellowship for those who would like to understand how theory and practice go together; contribute to research, writing and editing across social and political issues of national importance; and learn from her 40+ years of experience working in the field of participatory democracy in rural India. In addition to working with her, this position will also involve working as a resource person and handle the secretariat for a youth-led platform related to the democratic and constitutional freedom of expression - Jan Awaaz.
One part of my work was to assist her with her writing, including helping her with research and editing. Apart from this, I have been involved with the many activities of the larger outreach of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) and the School for Democracy (SFD). Both kinds of work have given me an understanding of the importance synergy between theory and practice.
The Jan Awaaz fellowship is linked to the School for Democracy, and focuses on involving youth and others on issues of freedom of expression. It attempts to deepen engagement with social issues and political processes in a creative and constructive manner, using various modes of culture, art, expression and discussion. The fellow will be able to connect the MKSS and SFD with other organisations and networks to co-create campaigns for popularising constitutional values and protecting the freedom of expression.
A new initiative of School for Democracy & Jan Awaaz is going to be a docu-series tentatively entitled: ‘Aruna Roy in Conversation with Activists’. While this is in the preliminary stages, the fellow will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that designs and rolls out this new and exciting project. Through this, we not only hope to capture, archive and project the voices of activists in different spheres, but to record their personal challenges and narratives and political struggles over time. This will create a body of work and archive people’s efforts to build a compassionate, democratic and inclusive India. It will also provide a strong counter narrative, to the divisive stories that are such a threat to multi cultural Constitutional values implicit in the structure of India.
There are of course more logistical tasks expected as well - documentation, archiving and management, writing e mails and so on.
Any person who is interested to work closely with Aruna Roy and with Jan Awaaz (as described above), and learn from her decades long experience of being an activist, working with people, democratic rights and policy, is invited to apply.
Education and Skills: Ability to write well in English is required, and at least basic communication skills in Hindi. Digital content creation would be an additional advantage, but not necessary.
Experience: We work in an equal & democratic living and work space and therefore no task is too small or insignificant for our members. We also have a commitment to living simply. A desire to learn a willingness to work in a collective, is a prerequisite.
Location and Travel: This position requires the fellow to be based primarily in rural Rajasthan. They could be based in Delhi or Jaipur but must be willing to travel and spend a reasonable amount of time with Aruna ji. Since the work format is unlike most other structured formal job settings, we ask the fellow to do a (paid) three-month trial before committing to the position.
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Stipend: Rs. 25,000/- per month.
