Dear Friends,

I am forwarding a mail from NAWO on the passage of the Women's Caravan demanding reservation for women in the Parliament. The Caravan will reach Bolangir on the 22nd and there will be a public meeting at Town Hall in the morning of the 23rd of May. If possible, please do join them in Bolangir if you are anywhere near to Bolangir. They reach Bhubaneswar on 23rd late evening and there will be a public meeting on the 24th. If possible, please do join them in Bhubaneswar. They leave Bhubaneswar for Vishakhapatnam  on 24th afternoon. Another way of joining the process couldbe to travel for portions of the distance with them whether in another bus, car/jeep or motorcycles/scooters. You could also have welcome banners and garlands etc. If there could be signature campaigns in support of women's reservation that could be handed over to the Caravan. The signatures could be taken in marker pens on white dhotis / sarees. They could also be hand prints on saree/dhoti for those who can not sign their names.  Please read the forwarded mail and the attached file for more information. For any clarifications, please contact NAWO at their Bhuabneswar office number or Pramila Apa or Lalita Apa (993709-0910).

with warm regards

Manas

Subject: Joint Statement of WRB

Letter No:
Date: 7th May 2010
To,

Sub: To participate in the public meeting and demanding the 33% reservation for women in the parliament and
state assembly on 23rd May at Town Hall ,Bolangir and 24th May 2010 at Jayadev Bhawan ,Bhubaneswar.
Dear Sir /Madam,
After 14 years of struggle the Rajya Sabha finally passed the Womens Reservation Bill on March 9, 2010.
Before even the WRB could be placed in Lok Sabha a strong opposition started against the bill. The patriarchal mindset which is opposed to womens participation in public life has very cleverly camouflaged its real agenda in arguments which on the face of it look to be in favour of the Muslim, OBC and Dalit women. This sudden love for the Muslim woman is emanating from the fear of losing their constituencies. On one hand there are those who have become the well wishers of the downtrodden marginalized woman on the other hand there are those who are banishing the Muslim woman from public life by invoking religion. While, the gross under-representation of Muslims in legislatures as well as jobs, of both men and women, needs to be redressed, this cannot be resolved or settled within the ambit of the womens reservation bill.
The message is very clear. They want to block the Womens Reservation Bill.
There is a need to mobilize support and raise the demand for the 33% Womens Reservations from all corners of the country.
Several women groups and networks in the country including NAWO have been demanding for 33% reservation for women in the parliament and state assemblies have now joined together under the leadership of ANHAD a group based in Delhi to take a journey across India in a Karwan .The Karawans will travel about 56 cities and towns and cover 15000 kms, the journey will begin at Jhansi in UP and then take three different routes and reach New Delhi by June 6th and the journey will end with a convention on 33% reservation .The main organizers ANHAD in Delhi have requested for local hosts to take care of the Karwan and make this journey a success. Local hosts will take charge of organizing public meeting, press meet as well as bear the cost of the people in the caravan (about 20 people) stay and food in the host state /city. There is no funding for this programme (visit website: www .reservation express.org for all details.)
The national Alliance of women since its inception has been involved in this issue and fully endorses this journey and along with other organizations has decided to be the local hosts both at Bolangir and Bhubaneswar. As per the preparation meeting held at NAWO office the following programme was finalized.
1. 22nd May 2010: arrival of the Karawan from Raipur late night dinner and stay.
2. 23rd May: 10 am Press meet. 11 am to 1Pm.: Public meeting at Town Hall Bolangir and depart for BBSR after Lunch.
3. 23rd may 2010: arrival at BBSR late evening, welcome, dinner at stay at BBSR.
4. 24th May 2010 : 10 am press meet at hotel Su Tripti .
5. 24th May 2010: 11am 1 pm: public meeting at Jayadev Bhawan.BBSR.
6. 24th may 2010: 1 pm: Lunch and departure for Visakhapatnam.
We therefore request you to kindly cooperate with us in enabling us to make this campaign a success.
We request you to do the following:
1. Mobilize Female PRI members to participate in this event either in Bolangir or at Bhubaneswar
2. Bear the travel and food of the participants you would bring it is only a two hour meeting and we will only provide Tiffin packets.
3. Collect signatures from women and men who support the 33% reservation at the assembly and Parliament level in a white Dhoti /saree ( will be sent to you by bus by the 17th May ) which can be handed over to the people who are coming in the karawan to be taken to Delhi.
We look forward to your positive response in this regard,
Yours sincerely ,
Ms.Pramila swain.
