New Update Report on Kachin Conflict, Burma
December 19, 2011
Project Maje has produced a new report, ”The North War, Part II: The Kachin Conflict Continues". This report is about the conflict between the Kachin Independence Organization and Burma's armed forces during August-December 2011, with first hand observations, interviews and a compilation of news items from an array of sources. The report is intended for journalists, aid workers, environmentalists and other researchers who may become interested in the war in northern Burma (Kachin State and part of Shan State), a region bordering China, Tibet and India. Topics covered include internally displaced people, military strategy, dams, and negotiations. A previous Project Maje report provided background on the war's first two months.
Project Maje is an independent information project on Burma's human rights and environmental issues, founded in 1986. The founder/director of Project Maje, Edith Mirante, visited Kachin Independence Organization controlled areas of Kachin State in 1991, 1995, 2002 and 2011.
