Duringthe investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include: Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders. A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts. Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes. Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but... Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Oh, I'm currently reading the French comic Jhen and it's hilarious. The titular hero is bestie with freaking Gilles de Rais- a prolific serial rapist and killer of boys who also cannibalizes them afterward. Even thought Jhen manages to save some of his intended victims, he never does worse than waving his finger at Gilles and makes him promise to stop doing it... only for the latter to inevitably relapse in his old vices. Gilles doesn't keep as a CM for many reasons (genuine friendschip with Jhen and the late Joan of Arc, feels remorse sometimes,...) but this might screw the heinous standard a bit.Edited by Silverblade2 on Jun 20th 2022 at 1:26:26 PM
Believe me, there's a villain in the reboot continuity whom I've handed off to Ravok who is the crowning king of the "hero just fucking lets the villain go" trope. In the reboot, there's even less reason for it.Edited by Scraggle on Jun 20th 2022 at 5:42:37 AM
Super Mario RPG: Starlite Worlds is a Super Mario Bros. Fan Game that was made in RPG Maker created by ICUGigasoft. For the record, despite the name, it's not based on Super Mario RPG but takes cues from a lot of Mario properties. In the game Mario and Luigi team up with Bowser to collect the Starlite Crystals and save the Starlite Worlds from.
Before we get to the actual game I need to talk about his backstory in the prequel video duology Story of Stiron (you can see it here and here). Back then he was known as G-17 and was a member of the world Stiron, the world was home to a powerful artifact the aforementioned Starlite Crystal but the planet had no leadership so there were constant battles fought over this. G-17 is a member of Glok's army and during a battle with two of Clank's soldiers, his "friends" C-5 and C-8 are killed which C-17 brushes off. He ends up killing a few more people to reach the Starlite Crystal and succeeds in reaching it but the artifact splits into eight pieces and creates the Starlight Worlds destroying Striton in the process.
G-17 gets resurrected though by one of the Starlight's by chance and takes on the name King Stiron after his homeworld. Stiron sees his resurrection as the chance he has been waiting for and begins his quest to recreate his world by collecting the 8 crystals. Stiron is actually doing this so he can rule over it.
Stiron throughout the game does a lot of awful stuff including threatening to kill two guardians to get a crystal; trapping almost the entire Meta World in crystals; teaming up with Kamort; and attempting to kill the heroes numerous times. Stiron's goal to recreate his world will destroy every single Starlight world in the process something which he knows about and is not only okay with but wants it. He is luckily stopped and killed but he gets very close to succeeding with his plan.
Now I will say on the surface you could say Stiron is a Tragic Villain and a Well-Intentioned Extremist as his home was destroyed and he seeks to restore it no matter the cost. This, if not for the fact that Stiron only wants to restore his world so that he can rule over it making his goal completely selfish instead of selfless reasons. The prequel story also shows that Stiron was already horrible even before all of this happened so he isn't a tragic villain at all.
Other than that Stiron has no redeeming traits. He cares about nobody but himself showing no care for C-5 and C-8 when they are killed and only viewing Kamort as a pawn. He also only respects the heroes for their skills but still tries to kill them anyway and considers them foolish so yeah it's not redeeming at all.
Laughably Easily. Stiron wants to recreate his world which will mean committing omnicide on multiple worlds something which he both wants and is fine with. It is made explicit that this will mean the end of everyone inside and the end of the world, we even see the worlds falling apart at the end.
