So I did as all teachers do at the end of the year and reflected on how whole class reading had gone. Generally, it had gone well. Our results were good, the children left as avid readers and there were very few complaints. We decided to take the approach whole school, but, I knew that my 5 day model was difficult to emulate, and that it may be quite a time consuming activity. I had also taken these main two things from my own teaching of it:

We really thought about this one and decided it was pivotal they remained in the lesson, even if it meant someone had to read the full text to them. This meant they would still be able to work on those specific reading skills, despite not yet having the separate decoding skills. It is vital that decoding time is put away for those who need it, separate to the whole class reading sessions. It cannot be a substitution.

Reflection offers you the opportunity to consider how your personal experiences and observations shape your thinking and your acceptance of new ideas. Professors often ask students to write reading reflections. They do this to encourage you to explore your own ideas about a text, to express your opinion rather than summarize the opinions of others. Reflective writing can help you to improve your analytical skills because it requires you to express what you think, and more significantly, how and why you think that way. In addition, reflective analysis asks you to acknowledge that your thoughts are shaped by your assumptions and preconceived ideas; in doing so, you can appreciate the ideas of others, notice how their assumptions and preconceived ideas may have shaped their thoughts, and perhaps recognize how your ideas support or oppose what you read.

However, this approach did not work while reading the .txt file from an the executing assembly. I would really appreciate if anybody can point me to the approach to read .txt file from an assembly. Please dont ask me why I am not reading the file from the drive or the network share. Just say that the requirement is to read the .txt file from the Assembly.

Great video!! I like the way you put it together and used a narrative to explain exactly your process of reading like a writer. I think the genre of video works perfectly here as trying to write out all that you did would have been more difficult to understand. Great job!

I bought up some of those little mini-composition notebooks because they were on sale at Target the other day and now I know what I am using them for!! I did all of my reflecting and jotting in a normal sized composition notebook this summer. Even I got bogged down in that so I was looking at ways to help my students with that. Thanks for yet another great idea! Love the video too. I may be using it in the classroom!!!

Well done Ruth! I loved seeing you explain how you used the notebooks and found myself wondering about how I might pull together the scattered threads of things I have going (or wish I had going!). I have a feeling that you are on to something important with not only the reflecting but also in the sharing.

Let's explore the importance of information writing and address common problems writers face in this genre. The episode delves into the need for explicit instruction in note-taking, emphasizing the purpose of notes as a tool for critical thinking rather than mere proof or text transfer. It also offers various approaches to enhance information writing by incorporating lists, exploring different text features, and integrating tricks like twin sentences and transitional phrases.\u00a0Links to resources mentioned in this episode:
