Chinese astrology also has five elements of nature, namely water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. According to Chinese astrology, a person's destiny can be determined by the position of the planets and the positions of the Sun and Moon at the person's time of birth. The Chinese believe that our birth year can determine our attitude and potential and that animal birth signs have symbolism and represent specific behavior.
Jyotisha is the traditional Hindu system of astrology and astronomy, which is also known as Hindu or Indian astrology, or more recently, Vedic astrology. Vedic astrology horoscopes are divided into three main branches: Indian astronomy, Mundane astrology, and Predictive astrology. Indian astrology can reveal our character, guide our future, and reveal which signs are most compatible with ours. One of the greatest tools that Vedic astrology has given us is the position of the Moon and Nakshatras. The Nirayana (sidereal zodiac) is a fictional belt of 360 degrees, which, like the tropical zodiac, is divided into twelve equal parts. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the moving zodiac, Vedic astrology uses the fixed zodiac. So, in the Vedic zodiac system, you will most likely no longer be the same star sign you thought you were, although there are some exceptions.
Some people believe in astrology because others before them did and curiosity is a basic human nature, but the further we are drawn into astrology, the clearer things become. Here's how planetary scientist (and full disclosure, my good friend) Melissa Rice puts it: "The zodiac is the 12 constellations that the sun passes through in its motions across the sky. And because there are 12 of them and 12 months in the year, it's convenient for us to associate time with the position of the sun in these specific constellations."
The sun wasn't in your constellation when you were born. Thanks to precession, it was really in Scorpio. This is related to why horoscopes talk about certain periods of time, called "ages." Each age is associated with a specific constellation that the Earth's tilt is pointing toward at that time. 2,000 years ago, soon after the zodiac was first created, we were in the Age of Pisces.
Astrologers use 12 of these constellations to roughly correspond with the signs of the zodiac to make predictions. (The 13th, Ophiuchus, it omitted because when the signs were first described, the stars were not in exactly the same position as they are today.)
Orion isn't one of the zodiac constellations, though. Those constellations are defined mostly by their position on the ecliptic, an imaginary or projected line in the sky that marks the perceived path of the sun (as well as the rough paths of the planets and the moon, which are all more or less on the same plane) over the course of a year on Earth.
The path of the ecliptic passes through 13 of the 88 constellations officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) since 1929. Just 12 of those constellations make up the western zodiac.
However, people were mapping the sky long before these names took hold. Ancient China, Sumeria in the Middle East and Egypt each had their own star maps, for example. According to a 2017 paper from the journal of the American Philosophical Society, many of the Greek constellations that we consider to be the Western zodiac today were adopted from Babylonian astronomers. They referred to "The Twins," "The Lion" and "The Crab" thousands of years ago, which are the same constellations we (and the ancient Greeks) know as Gemini, Leo and Cancer, respectively.
Now, however, astrology is commonly considered a pseudoscience. No evidence has been found for the predictive power of astrological predictions based on the zodiac, as demonstrated in this 1985 paper from the journal Nature.
The IAU's 88 constellations, which include all 12 of the zodiac constellations, are still relevant to researchers today. Astronomers can use those markers to explain what parts of the sky are part of their work, or orient themselves to find objects they have seen in space.
The Morehead Planetarium also recommends using constellations as a reference point to spot faster-moving planets. For casual skywatchers, the zodiac constellations are recognizable because they have a story and shape associated with them. When a planet appears as a bright object in a constellation, watchers can spot that one of the "stars" is out of place and might actually be Mars, Jupiter or Venus instead.
Zodiac was Mucha's first work under his contract with the printer Champenois and was originally designed as an in-house calendar for the company. In this composition, Mucha incorporated twelve zodiac signs in the halo-like disk behind the woman's head, one of Mucha's customary motifs. The majestic beauty of the woman is emphasised by her regal bearing and elaborate jewellery.
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's installation of twelve bronze sculptures representing the animals of the Chinese zodiac, Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, will be mounted in the Cleveland Museum of Art's newly opened atrium this summer. While the installation is meant to be playful and appealing to a broad audience, Ai Weiwei's notorious passion for engaging China's political and cultural history in sometimes controversial ways lurks just below the surface. The inspiration for Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads is an 18th-century Qing imperial fountain featuring the twelve zodiac characters whose bronze heads were looted by invading Europeans during the Second Opium War. By recreating the disembodied heads of these figures on a monumental scale, Ai Weiwei raises issues of cultural patrimony, national pride, and China's ongoing relationship with its own history. The Cleveland Museum of Art's renowned collection of Chinese art creates an apt backdrop for this contemporary work, which both reinterprets a traditional Chinese theme and questions our relationship with cultural objects and their histories.
