【讲座简介】

The lecture will be devided in two parts:

part 1. Introduction. The concept of social capital and its definitions. Social 
capital as a public resource at macro level. Social capital as a club good at
meso level. Social capital as relational resource at micro level. Network
analysis as an analytical tool in the study of relational social capital. How
social capital contributes to business success. Changes in small business
activities in Europe and the role of foreign
immigrants. Interpersonal relations and business resilience in time of crisis
in Europe.
part 2. An
application to the study of mobilized social capital among immigrant business
people in Italy
is presented. Social capital is measured through interpersonal relations in
terms of the size and ethnic composition of Ego-networks and the strength of
the ties with Alters which are used to mobilize strategic resources for
business success. The results show that the occupational status of Alters is
positively related to business performance and that social capital is a better
predictor of business resilience than cultural capital and ethnic belonging, with
the important exception of the Chinese. Hypothesis to explain this exception
are proposed for discussion.
