Hi folks,

We had a great organizing meeting this past Thursday for the Oregon Cooperative Housing Network (OCHN, or OR CO-OP), with the Portland Small Developers Alliance (PDX SDA), the Portland Sub-Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism (PDX CNU), and others.

For those who missed it, as well as for attendees who would like access to meeting materials, see below….

Meeting Recordings, chat, transcripts:

Presentations:

Finally, next steps include the formation of an organizing committee; if you or somebody you knows is interested in joining this committee to help make this thing happen, please reply or otherwise let us know!

Also, please let us know if you’re not quite THAT interested, but still want to be kept up to date on how this thing evolves, and of future opportunities to plug in.

cheers,
~Garlynn & Tim

Garlynn & Tim, I would like to confirm my interest in serving on the OCHN organizing committee.
a. Besides my 24+ years living in housing co-ops and serving on committees and board, please see my relevant experience in the attached one-page bio.
b. Some initial thoughts include clarifying the preliminary mission statement, envisioning where we want to see OCHN 5 years from now, developing a strategic plan to realize that vision, and concentrating on a tactical plan for the first year.
c. Using models like the DC Cooperative Housing Coalition, incorporating OCHN, dividing the organizing committee into groups that might mirror a board committee structure, converting the orcoop.org Google doc into a website, recruiting network members and affiliates, and doing the development work for bridge funding.
Thank you for considering my membership, Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks, I think you’re an essential ingredient to the success of this endeavor.

We’re working to organize and prepare for our next meeting, so more on that soon!!

Cheers,

Hi Liz,

That’s great to hear!

Out of curiosity, does your interest lie more in statewide policy and coordination to support cooperatives, or in local development of new cooperative housing?

Cheers,
~Garlynn

I'm in the process of publishing a Vision piece I did for a PSU Urban Design class. A draft is up--without photos--as it has taken me until now to find my old USP 524 folder--which is a wealth of visuals. Anyway, Tim, Garlynn, I mention OR-Co-op and would like to use its logo as one of my visuals.

I believe that you can take a look at what I have so far, here: https://plangreen.net/blog --as it is the latest one.

Hello everyone! I just heard about a notice for a public comment period for a parcel of land owned by Butler Creek Elementary School in an emerging-suburban-bordering-rural-ish area in Gresham. The parcel is currently undeveloped, but apparently a portion of it will be in the future. The current stage is subdividing it looks like, that's what the comment period is for, I think.

For leaving comments: Emailed or postal mailed written comments must be received by 5pm Wed 12/08 (next Wed) to the email address P...@greshamorgon.gov. Sorry, too lazy to look up the mailing address if you want to go that route!

I was told by the City of Gresham's planning department that anyone can comment, so I thought to share with you all if you're interested in taking a look and leaving feedback, ex, ideas about co-op housing to maybe consider (I was going to, myself!); design elements that reflect climate resiliency like rain gardens/ water capture, native plants/ trees, adequate drainage in crawl spaces. I'm studying permaculture design at Oregon State University (I want to be a professional permaculture designer/ consultant one day!). I'm very new and still learning, but I want to leave comments like for hedgerows instead of fences, food gardens/ options for garden plots, along with mentioning rain gardens and native plants. And to maybe consider universal design/ grow old in place elements, multi-generational options, co-op housing. Better stormwater runoff design at the streets.

The public notice is attached and has OCR text recognition applied, so you can search for certain words and copy and paste text.

Also, the planner Tabitha overseeing the project was kind to email me more info, which is pasted below.

Looking at it all quickly, it seems like this project is at the very early stages for subdividing into parcels and then developing the parcels. So, I don't know if the above comments that I want to leave are relevant at this stage, but I'm putting them out there, whoosh-whoosh! All the best! ~ christina🎈

MORE INFO ABOUT THE PROJECT FROM THE PLANNER TABITHA:

Christina,

Thank you for your inquiry about LD-21-00395 at Butler Creek Elementary. I’ve marked up a quick map with the edge of the property that is proposed to be divided in red. This phase of land use review is looking at dividing the southern part of the school district’s property for a potential future subdivision. The northern section would remain as the school’s property. A “tract” is proposed along the creek which would set that land aside, not to be developed in the future.

A future subdivision review would be required for development including buildable lots and public improvements like roads and sidewalks. Such a future review would also be subject to our noticing requirements.

Proposed division:

You can view the complete application materials online here:

https://greshamor-energovweb.tylerhost.net/apps/SelfService#/plan/eead8689-c499-423b-9042-c8566f0a62f0?tab=attachments. No Log-in is required. The City no longer uses ePlan except for older legacy applications submitted prior to our current permit system.

We definitely welcome written comments; please send those to P...@greshamorgon.gov by 5pm on December 8th.

Hello again, I submitted my comments to the City of Gresham and mentioned Cascade CNU and the Oregon Cooperative Housing Network : ) This undeveloped land is kind of a wetlands area and possible flood plain, so it would be cool if they incorporated a lot more permeable options and made sure the crawlspaces and basements stay dry, if development proceeds!

Thought, maybe this is already being done: If the Oregon Cooperative Housing Network found people or organizations who are willing to purchase parcels of land for not only equitable housing but also holistic, sustainable, & climate-resilient development, that would be a win-win! So, not just developers purchasing, but anyone or any organizations who have the funds to purchase land. And then do thoughtful development based on partnerships & public input on how they want their neighborhoods to look like : ) Best! ~ christina
