Hi all,

As many of you know, institutions added on ORCID profiles are
overwhelmingly identified by Ringgold ID, a numerical id coming from a
proprietary database, making it relatively hard to work with.

I have just released an updated version of the dataset providing a
partial correspondance between Ringgold and ISNI identifiers, with the
associated metadata:
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3241717

I am still not sure why Ringgold ids are used in the first place, given
that Ringgold exposes ISNI ids as well (and those are openly available).

Anyway, I hope it can be useful to others who have to deal with this
data. Do report any issue you have with the dataset!

Antonin

Hi Antonin,

Thanks for sharing your work on this.

When we launched the organization ID funtionality, ISNI was not yet part of the Ringgold database.

We do now also support GRID, FundRef, and LEI organization ids.

Best regards,

Will

Hi Will,

Thanks, that explains it! I have two other questions:

Given that every Ringgold ID has a corresponding ISNI id, was it ever
considered to switch to ISNI ids after the ISNI dataset was released? I
assume it should not be too hard for you to convert the existing data
since you have access to the Ringgold database, which contains the ISNI
ids as well? Ringgold themselves describe their Ringgold ID as something
that is not meant to be exposed and recommend ISNI as public identifier.
https://www.ringgold.com/ringgold-becomes-the-first-contracted-isni-registration-agency-for-institutions/

Also, based on this matching work, I suspect that ORCID's copy of the
Ringgold database has not been updated for a few years now. Are there
any plans to refresh it?

Cheers,
Antonin
