research-resources - any good examples out there?

Hi Folks,

I'm currently looking at the research resources API, as I'd like to tie it into our allocation award system (for the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre - researchers can apply for a peer-reviewed allocation of CPU time on our systems). I've seen the demo video for EMSL, but is there anyone out there who can point to other integrations?

Vague plan is that we would create an 'Infrastructure' record (or possibly 'Service'?) for the award and the cluster it's valid on - some examples would be in the same format as https://pawsey.org.au/science-showcase/project-allocations/

Can someone confirm if this is the sort of thing that this the sort of workflow the record type was designed for? and can they share some really *good* examples (as well as bad ones to avoid) we can aim for?

Oh, and if anyone's got models and views for linking with a django application portal, so much the better :-)

Many thanks

Andrew
(one of the sysadmins for Pawsey)

Hi Andrew,

We don’t have any Django models or views but we would have the expertise to help on the Django side of things?

What can we do to help?

Kind regards,

Andrew,

I'm the developer who wrote the EMSL integration. I'd be happy to discuss our implementation in more detail. Contact me at nathan...@pnnl.gov.

A little update after playing error whack-a-mole for the last day. - This is based on my "curl post json ; read error ; edit ; repeat" workflow rather than a fully integrated workflow for now, but some things I noticed:

* resource-type has to be in lower case (as per the XSL) not with an initial capital as per https://info.orcid.org/documentation/workflows/research-resources-workflow/#easy-faq-2571 - You've got it lowecase for works (https://info.orcid.org/documentation/integration-and-api-faq/#easy-faq-26820 ) but I hadn't spotted the difference

* There doesn't seem to be a suitable place to put an amount / value in a research-resource -- in our case it'll be in "allocation units" (~CPU Hours) - is there generic key:value mapping? - Can't use the 'Funding' amount as that (rightly) wants a currency type. Yes it'll be in the linked URL, but that's a hop awsy.

* There doesn't seem to be a way to add "collaborators" to a research resource in the same way that there are for works - we'd probably want "principal-investigator" and "co-investigator"

I suspect these two were covered in the trial period? Can't see feedback from that time.

Finally in https://sandbox.orcid.org/inbox the nice big box on the left doesn't include "sandbox" in the visible URL - even though the 'preview public record' URL does.

Hi Andrew,

I saw your posts on twitter, glad to see you're making progress!

I'll get the FAQ item updated.  These are very new docs, so thanks for noticing.  Similarly, we've raised a bug to have 'sandbox' added back to the sandbox UI, we're not sure what happened there.

The working group that came up with the research resource schema wanted to balance compactness with completeness, and resource amount and collaborators just didn't make the cut.  As you say, the funding amount won't work for this as 1) it's funding item specific, not research resource specific, and 2) as you mention it requires a currency.

I'd love to be able to say that we will be able to revisit this metadata schema at some point, but that 'some point' is quite a way off right now.  Updating these requires us to release a new API version as well as schema, and that's not something we've got planned for 2021.  Hopefully, these issues aren't blockers for you, but we've taken notes so that when we do make a new API version, they're considered.

Best,
