Hi Muhammed,

We're very excited to hear you're working on an ORCID integration for the University of Fallujah. The ORCID API doesn't have a login or a user interface, instead you use the client ID and secret to make a system to system connection. The Swagger page you've linked to is an interface that lets you test out making those connections- you enter your client ID and secret at the top of page then select which API call you would like to test, you will want to turn authentication on for the calls you are testing and enter a sandbox ORCID ID that you will test reading or writing to.

You may also want to review our documentation at https://members.orcid.org/ about using the API in general or the documentation for setting up ORCID with DSpace at https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/ORCID+Integration.  I have also cc-ed Nabil on this message who can follow up with more information to help you get started.

Best,
-Catalina

Good day ORCID folks,

This is new ORCID member, University of Fallujah, Iraq, the first Iraq-wide ORCID member ever.

I write this to report twin concerns.

At first, We seek to integrate our institution D-space (http://ufds.uofallujah.edu.iq/) with ORCID

Additionally, we intend to have API institutional faculty login. More relatedly, I have already been in liaison with Nabil in this regard. He advised me to join this group. He already provided me with (Your sandbox Member API testing credentials)

Display name University of Fallujah

Client ID APP-QJ8O18VE99LAWHQ5

Client secret 654675a3-c3e0-4cf4-80bb-dc30b1dbc858

However, I experience a technical problem where I can't make an API login, as shown in this link https://api.sandbox.orcid.org/v2.0/

We report this seeking your kind support and technical intervention hopefully we get these two concerns resolved.

I remain appreciative of your sustainable support.

Many thanks indeed.

Hi Muhammed and Catalina,

This is Monica from the UK consortium lead team.  This is very timely as I have recently (and in the past) been looking into how dspace works with ORCID and trying to understand this and find out more information on behalf of our UK institutions using dspace.

I think what might be helpful to understand is the scope of what dpsace currently support compared to the requirements in the recent repository recommendations:

https://orcid.org/blog/2019/02/27/recommendations-using-orcid-repositories

The main functionality available is that of storing ORCID IDs in the dspace metadata and indexing and doing ORCID ID lookup or bulk importing of ORCID IDs – there is currently no provision in the core code of doing authentication via oauth for users as in https://members.orcid.org/api/integrate/create-records or https://members.orcid.org/api/workflow/repository#1collect

There are examples of institutions that have had custom work carried out as enhancement to their dspace based systems e.g. KAUST as linked on https://members.orcid.org/api/vendors/repository-tools

My understanding is that dspace is committed to a more complete integration with ORCID in version 7, but not expected in the first release.

Nabil you may want to connect with Paula who has been helping me look into this, if you have not done so already.  It would be good to join forces although we do not have large numbers of dspace users connecting or using ORCID (mainly due to the variety of versions of dspace being used).

However we do have the University of Cambridge with a dspace data repository, we are hoping to release a case study soon, based on their workflow which featured in this EMEA webinar.  Cambridge carry out authentication of users and capture of ORCID ID through their Symplectic Elements ORCID integration, then pass the ORCID ID to dpscace for data deposit processes.

I hope this helps a little (although it is not directly about your error).

Best wishes,

Monica
