Dennis,

I was just browsing through some of the links on this site and
wondered what you thought of this website http://www.dazzling-world.com/orchid/index.html
and John Perez's ebook and home made recipes for rapid orchid growth.
I would be really curious to know your expert thoughts on it.

Thanks,
Asian Butterfly

There is that old saying: "If it sounds too good to be true, it is."
And I suspect this is true with Mr. Perez's book. Yes, there certainly
are ways to make fertilizers and insecticides using items found in the
kitchen and bathroom, but if not done exactly you can burn your plants
to a crisp. Plus, many of those recipies are to be found on other
blogs and posting sites, though I don't have links to those sites to
give you.

I am very sceptical of the claim that you can see results in orchids
from anything within 24 hours (except insecticide, or for some genera
like Masdevallias, repotting). They just do not move that fast. And I
assume that "increasing the growth rate 250%" will result in soft
growth less likely to resist attack from insects and pathogens, or
hold itself up properly. Orchids given the optimal conditions, proper
repotting, and regular fertilization will grow as fast and as well as
they can. And fertilizer or "miracle treatments" cannot take the place
of proper light, watering temperature range and air movement.

I have not actually seen the e-book, as I am not about to pay for it
based on the hyperbole of his website. The links you see on this site
are provided by Google, and we (the San Francisco Orchid Society) do
not necessarily endorce them. Of course, if you choose to get the
book, and find the claims accurate, I certainly want to know about it!

Sincerely,
Dennis
