Dear Orchid Doctor

How are you I received a orchid as a gift from a friend.
The Orchid was blooming then and had two Stems fill with flowers. With time the flower dried up and the stems remained.

I notice that on of those stems are getting yellow.  I would like to know if this is normal.

Further I am giving the orchid water once a week,  I live in the Caribbean and I have the Orchid plan inside but close to a window where it gets some sun light but is not exposed directly to the sun.

Please you help on this matter.

Regards

Leonardo Juan Pedro

Dear Leonardo:

Flowers, and the stems that bear them are temporary sexual organs. If the flowers do not get pollinated, the flower stem will usually die back after the flowers fall (a few types can bloom again from that same stem, most do not). Properly grown, an orchid will produce a new flowering stem yearly in the proper season, as most other plants do. I cannot tell you how often to water, or what the proper care for your plant might be, as the Orchid family is huge, and the species very wildly in the culture that they prefer (watering frequency, light, temperature range and so on).

In the Caribbean many Orchids can be grown outdoors in very bright shade (some of them with some direct sun) all year. Without a genus name or a picture of the plant I cannot give you more specific information.

Sincerely,
Dennis
