Hello team,
As promised in the weekly email, I'm going to request for you to share
on the discussion board how your campus publishes service news. This
will look different for each campus, so please share information that
makes the most sense for you. ORCC will use this to follow your
service updates and promote your program, while the rest of the team
will benefit from resources-sharing as well.

Please share information you have for the following:
*If your campus does not have regular service announcements such as an
E-News or blog, please still answer questions #3-4.
1. Please post a link to your campus’ website, latest campus E-News
posting, or blog spot.
2. How do you regularly communicate up-coming service opportunities
with your campus? (ie. weekly/monthly emails, flyers, community reader
boards, printed newsletter, etc.)
3. Who is the contact person for posting this information? Is this
person you, or does it come form a different department on campus?
4. What other means of communication do you use for sharing
announcements and service opportunities? (ie. Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, etc.)

Thank you for taking a few minutes to respond!
Katie

Hello :)

SOU's Civic Engagement has a website where we post info
about our ongoing civic opportunities and programs: www.sou.edu/su/ce

The website and our facebook page also have links to our sign-up
form for our newsletter we just started. You can access the latest
one through a link on our facebook wall:
http://www.facebook.com/messages/100002531226931#!/SOUCivicEngagement
The newsletter is through mailchimp.com, thanks to Signe and Katie!

We have our own information board in our Civic Engagement Residence
Hall that has fliers for the current service projects, as well as a
countdown
to the closest service day.

The contact people for all info having to do with our projects is
myself,
the head of the program, and our student employee. The Student Life
office (which the Civic Engagement Program is under) just hired an
individual to help all Student Life programs with advertising by
posting
fliers and updating all social media outlets, as well as handing out
fliers
and such.

Some of the creative things we've come up with for certain big
service
projects included putting table tents on all tables in the cafeteria,
offices,
and resource centers of the student union. We just ordered handbills
from
our student publicity center and stapled three together to make them.
We
have also gone through the residence halls to have fliers posted in
all of
the halls (they're given to the Residence Hall staff, approved, and
handed
out to all of the R.A.'s to post in their halls). We've also tabled in
the foyer
of the student union, selling grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato
soup
to draw volunteers and participants in programs, as well as for
fundraising
for our alternative break trips. We also have giant posterboards that
are
rented out by the publicity center that groups can reserve for 1-week
slots
with 4 ft.X4 ft. posters they design.

Hope this helps!

Hi Everyone!

2. I communicate with my students via bulletin boards and fliers. Some
of these I draw/create myself and others are absorbed from the Student
Life office on Chemeketa's main campus.

3. I am currently the person responsible for updating this information.
Does anyone have suggestions on how I might transition this role so that
it doesn't go by the wayside when I am done? One of the trickiest
adjustments for me to make has been not relying on email/electronic
sources for information distribution because it is not widely used by my
students.

4. Because many if not most of our students do not have regular access
to the internet or the habit of checking email, we rely on
word-of-mouth, fliers, postings, etc for distribution.

I hope ya'll are doing well!!! I miss you!!!! :)

Hi Everyone!

1. N/A (We are in the process of creating a website)

2. The past two quarters were dedicated to creating and promoting events solely within
our project via text/e-mail/FB. Now that we have established the program we will be promoting
campus wide using flyers, word of mouth and tabling.

3. I am currently the person updating this information. We are in the process of creating
group of student leaders in our program that I can assign the responsibility and have
them assist me with posting this information.

4. Again, since we were mainly promoting within our small group we focused on text/e-mail/FB.
Now that we are going to be promoting campus-wide, I'd like to use resources such as the campus
radio station and the campus newspaper.

Hi folks,

I hope this message finds you all well! Here is the service low-down at
the UO:

1. The Service-Learning Program website: http://serve.uoregon.edu/. On
this page students can access an events calendar where we publish our
own service events as well as those of our community partners. Students
also register for service events through this page.

2. We send out bimonthly mailings through our mail chimp account to all
members of Duck Corps - our network of student volunteers - highlighting
upcoming service events as well as on-going service opportunities in the
community. We also have a monthly e-newsletter - You Got Served! - that
features upcoming service events, and recognizes the work of one of our
community partners and an outstanding student. For large-scale service
events, we also send student staff to classes and student group meetings
to make announcements and we hand door hangers on unsuspecting doorknobs
all over campus! We also have a large "Get Involved" banner to promote
these types of events.

3. I am the primary contact.

4. We are big fans of facebook as a way to reach students not already
signed up for Duck Corps and for Duck Corps members who may not check
their email regularly. We make facebook events for all of our service
projects and invite all of our "friends."

See you all in June!

Leisha

1) SOU First Year Mentor Program (FYMP) facebook
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002123665368&ref=ts
Official SOU FYMP Site http://www.sou.edu/firstyear/mentor.html

2) Most communication occurs through weekly emails to program
participants. We also have three FYMP bulletin boards around campus;
one on the main floor of the Stevenson Union, one in main residence
hall and one in Academic Support Programs. These boards display
contact information, as well information about our most recent events
and how to get involved throughout the term.

3) I am the primary contact.

4) Facebook is a major tool for recruiting and keeping students and
SOU Administration in the loop. You can “friend” SouMentor Program and
find event postings for all of our major and ongoing activities.

Hello,

Thanks everyone for sharing all of these strategies. I've been trying
to think about how to broaden our base of engaged students and let
people know about upcoming volunteer opportunities besides posting
flyers or sending out emails to people we already know. As Polly
already mentioned, we face some particular challenges working at a
community college. On our side, the population includes older, low-
income, non-traditional students. It's not a residential campus, so
our students may literally drive up, go into their classroom building,
and then leave without ever seeing a flyer or hearing about service
projects going on. They may not even be interested in this information
since many of them consider themselves unable to volunteer: they are
working full or part-time, taking care of families, facing health
problems that limit physical mobility, etc. Practically speaking, many
of my students cannot participate in activities that happen on
weekends because the Salem bus service does not run on Saturdays or
Sundays and they cannot afford to drive a car. Some of them do not
even have email accounts other than the ones the college automatically
creates for them, or lack the technological skills to know how to
access online resources. I tried to use print media and get a
community service calendar started in the student-run campus newspaper
to list upcoming opportunities, and it never appeared!

I say all this to bring attention to some of these potential
limitations and to relate how eye-opening it's been to work here and
try to reach people other than the "usual suspects" that hang out or
work in our student life office, participate in certain clubs, or take
our service learning courses--not that that core group hasn't been
great and accomplished a lot!

We do have a Facebook page that is administered by student employees
where we can promote events, as well as a larger college Facebook
presence, and I have used both of those outlets with some success. The
larger website is pretty static, and again, it isn't checked regularly
by students. We have also tabled with sign-up sheets and given public
presentations with pizza as a draw. Some of the students in my course
recently visited classes to make announcements about the food drive
they were organizing and were able to secure participation from an
instructor to offer extra credit to those who participated--that's
another idea. I have an email listserv of students I know who are
willing to help with our campus garden, but that's a group that I've
created for a particular purpose. Perhaps one thing I might explore is
sending email blasts to faculty members who teach related subjects;
for example, I got the director of the Horticulture program to tell
all of her students about our last work day. But many of the
instructors are busy commuters as well!

One last thing: we got a really good turnout for the work day from
having our director generate a list of students that he thought would
or should volunteer and then instructing our student workers to
literally call each of the people on the list at home and ask them to
come and help. That personal, direct approach probably isn't feasible
on a large-scale, though... :)

Hi there,

As we are still a new and growing department, communication is something that we are still figuring out the best way to do when it comes to service opportunities. We currently employ a number of methods, but are still trying to assess what is the most effective way to make communication happen.

1. Here is a link to our main Office of Service Leadership page on the CU website: http://www.cu-portland.edu/campuslife/volunteer_opportunities/index.cfm

We also have a volunteer opportunities blog that can be located here: http://blog.cu-portland.edu/volunteer-opportunities/

And we have a google page with additional information about our department: www.cuservepdx.com

2. We primarily communicate upcoming service events through flyers, all-campus emails, and word of mouth. Since we are a smaller campus, word of mouth seems to be pretty effective.

3. This information can be communicated to anyone within the Office of Service Leadership to be posted or sent out.

4. In addition to our website and blog information listed above, we also have a facebook page.

I hope this is helpful!

Best,

Amy
